Iran, August 7, 2020—Over 84,400 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 369 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Friday afternoon local time, August 7. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 18,132 around a fifth of the actual figure.
The death toll in various provinces include: 6,238 in Razavi Khorasan, 5,882 in Khuzestan, 3,944 in Mazandaran, 3,527 in Gilan, 3,440 in Lorestan, 2,644 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 2,555 in Alborz, 2,345 in Fars, 2,300 in Golestan, 2,199 in Hamedan, 2,050 in Kermanshah, 1,237 in North Khorasan, 1,055 in Hormozgan, 998 in Markazi (Central), 985 in Ardabil, 985 in Bushehr, 965 in Yazd, and 790 in Zanjan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

“The only method to confront the novel coronavirus is to use masks. Unfortunately, 40 to 50 percent of the country’s population cannot purchase masks. We need to provide masks to them free of any charge,” said the chair of the regime’s Majlis (parliament) Health Commission on Thursday. “We are in contact with charities across the country in order to provide hygiene goods for those in need in Sistan & Baluchsitan province,” he added, according to the state-run Entekhab daily.
“Up to Thursday morning 3,936 Covid-19 patients were hospitalized across this province,” said the governor of Tehran province on Friday. “The capital and other cities remain registered as red zones,” he added, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

“During the past week, 80 percent of the beds in Ashrafi Hospital have been filled with patients. The illness index has changed, and the intensity of this virus has increased. We need more ICU beds. To this day 187 people have died of Covid-19 in this city. The medical staff is tired and a number of our physicians and medical professionals have been contaminated with the virus and can no longer provide their services,” said the head of Khomeini Shahr Hospitals Association on Thursday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
“Based on instructions issued by the Provincial Covid-19 Task Force, cemeteries closed once again since July 13 and funerals are carried out with only a small number of relatives. Around 35 people are working in the Beheshte Rezvan cemetery and more than 120 are working in the Mashhad Municipality Gardens Organization due to Covid-19 and they are under extreme pressures,” said Director of the Mashhad Municipality Cemeteries Organization on Friday, according to the IRNA news agency.

In Mazandaran province, the governor of Babolsar county said, “It will be impossible to provide adequate services to patients with the current medical facilities and equipment in the county. This county lacks complete medical centers and patients must go to adjacent counties such as Fereydoun Kenar and Babol. In the past weeks, coronavirus has rapidly spread in this county and the number of deaths and hospitalized patients have been very high.” (Source: IRNA, August 6)
In Hormozgan province, the manager of blood transfusion operations said, “The spread of coronavirus and fear of contracting Covid-19 are the main reasons less people are coming to blood transfusion centers. Currently, blood transfusion centers are faced with a shortage of blood reserves. On average, Hormozgan needs 150-200 units of blood daily, and if the situation persists, the blood reserves of the province will see a considerable drop in the next few days.” (Source: ISNA, August 7)
As the coronavirus outbreak continues, covering the expenses of treatment has become a serious problem for coronavirus patients, who are mostly from the impoverished segments of the society. According to the health ministry, it costs up to 50 million rials (approx. $220) to treat a coronavirus patient, the state-run Khabar Fori website reported (for reference, a worker earns 15 million rials per month on average). “A considerable part of the low-income segments of the society neither have a stable job nor health insurance booklets, nor complementary insurance,” Khabar Fori reported. “The question is, with the spread of coronavirus, the unemployment of part-time workers, and the reduction of the revenue of low-income families, what will we witness in the near future? What will be the fate of patients who can’t cover their expenses or the poor families whose backs are bent under the expense of medical treatment?”
