Half of Iran’s population live in absolute poverty

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, October 8, 2020—A report indicates a staggering 50 percent of Iran’s 84 million population lives in absolute poverty. This is just one window into the utter devastation caused by the mullahs’ 41-year rule over Iran.

The average monthly consumption of red meat among Iranian families in 2019 declined about 51.6 percent in comparison to 2011, according to the Statistics Center of Iran. Signs also indicate the situation has only deteriorated in 2020.

In this regard, the fourth income decile most certainly has the worst situation and red meat consumption for families in this sector has decreased by about 65.2 percent during the abovementioned period.

The average monthly consumption of rice among Iranian families in 2019 decreased by about 34.7 percent in comparison to 2011, according to the Statistics Center of Iran.

In 2018, about 24.3 percent and in 2019, about 35.4 percent of Iran’s total population lived below the absolute poverty line (even lower than the standards of African countries).

There are no statistics as of yet from the year 2020 but one can estimate that with the rampant rise in the price of foreign currencies, the triple-digit rise in the price of goods such as butter, beans, etc., as well as the skyrocketing rise in house and car prices, at least half of the Iranian people now live below the absolute poverty line.

Such reports are causing grave concerns among regime officials, especially when they bear witness to ongoing protests across the country.

Doctors protest in front of the University of Medical Sciences in the city of Shiraz, south-central Iran—October 7, 2020

On Wednesday, October 7, around 500 doctors held a rally at the University of Medical Sciences in the city of Shiraz, south-central Iran, protesting the regime’s "Doctor Family" initiative.

“In Fars and Mazandaran provinces, the doctor family initiative is being implemented and according to this plan, patient visits and injections are free, and the government pays the doctor for each visit. However, due to the government's economic status quo, we were told that we can ask patients to pay, which means that the government is not willing to pay the doctors. We also said that this is not true according to your own law,” one of the protesting doctors said.

“They want to create conflict between doctors and patients. They are literally fishing in troubled waters… We do not have many demands. What we are complaining about is that if the government does not have money, this initiative should be stopped. Otherwise, officials must follow their own laws and writings,” the doctor added.
