Iran: Labor protests over unpaid wages, poor working conditions

Iran, November 4, 2020—On Tuesday, November 3, a group of workers of the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company resumed their protests rallies . Haft Tappeh, located in Shush, Khuzestan province, is the largest agro-cultural complex of Iran. The workers of the company have been regularly protesting delayed wages, poor working conditions, and unstable contracts. State Security Forces arrested four Haft Tappeh labor activists on October 29. The workers have been gathering in front of the company's management office, the Security Police office, and the prosecutor’s office and demanding the immediate release of their arrested colleagues.

A group of workers of the Freight and Passenger Transportation Organization in the city of Yasuj, southeast Iran, held a rally on Monday, November 2, protesting delayed paychecks. This protest has been ongoing for several days.

One of the protesting workers referred that the eight-month-delayed paychecks and pointed out that they are in poor living conditions. “We repeatedly gathered in front of Yasuj Municipality and Yasuj City Council and protested the officials’ failure to pay our wages, but we still are facing negligence of city officials pursuing our demands,” one of the workers said.

These workers have not received their paychecks for at least  eight months.

Locals in the city of Saqqez, Kurdistan province, gathered in front of the Kurdistan Governor's Office in the city of Sanandaj on Monday, November 3, protesting the ownership status of their lands in “Bagh Khan” neighborhood being in limbo.

The protesters say the municipality has refused to allow construction work on their lands for several years even though they have paid for and bought the lands. They emphasized that they will continue their rally until their demands are fully met.

Elsewhere in the city of Basht, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad province, simultaneous with the opening of the “Farhangian Tadbir Mandegar commercial complex”, a group of merchants gathered protesting the high rental rate of shops.

One of the young protesters said: "I currently pay about 6 million rials for the shop and due to the bad economic situation and the purchasing power of the people, I can hardly pay this rent."

The Ministry of Education owns this commercial complex, and with the increase in the rental price of the shops, many shopkeepers will not be able to afford it and will force to close the shops.

A group of dismissed experienced workers from the petroleum desalination company in the city of Haftkel, Khuzestan province, gathered in front of the governor's office on Monday, November 3, and demanded officials to resolve the ongoing problems.

One of the dismissed workers of the company said: "I and many of the workers who have been worked from the beginning of the project until its opening, our only demand is to return to work."

“We had a hard time getting a job at this company and we lost a lot of job opportunities, and in 2017, when the desalination project opened, most of us were fired,” said another protesting worker.

It is worth noting that Haftkel is the second largest oil city in the Middle East and has 45 active oil wells. Haftkel, southwest of Iran, is located in Khuzestan province, 75 km northeast of the city ofAhvaz.
