PMOI Resistance Units mark anniversary of Ashraf massacre with nationwide defiance

On September 1, twelve years after the Iranian regime and its Iraqi proxies carried out the brutal massacre at Camp Ashraf, the echoes of that day are reverberating across Iran in a manner the clerics in Tehran never anticipated. What was intended as a final, crushing blow to the Iranian Resistance and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) has instead become a source of enduring inspiration. Across Iran, PMOI Resistance Units have transformed a day of profound mourning into a powerful, nationwide display of defiance, honoring the 52 martyrs by carrying their torch forward.

Their coordinated activities prove that the regime’s attempt to wipe out its organized opposition did not just fail—it backfired spectacularly, planting the seeds of its own undoing in the hearts of a new generation of activists.

From the capital of Tehran to major cities like Mashhad, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Zahedan, the Resistance Units launched a sweeping campaign to ensure the legacy of the Ashraf martyrs would not be forgotten. In a direct challenge to the regime’s authority, they took to the streets, displaying placards, posters, and graffiti with potent messages of resilience and commitment.

In cities including Karaj, Sari, Bandar Abbas, Hamedan, and Lahijan, slogans appeared on public walls, vowing to continue the fight. Messages such as, “We renew our pledge with the heroic martyrs of Ashraf on the anniversary of their martyrdom,” and “By the blood of our comrades, we will stand to the end,” served as a public declaration that the spirit of the resistance is stronger than ever.

These brave activists explicitly linked their struggle to the downfall of the theocracy, with posters declaring, “I salute the pure souls of the martyrs of September 1 in Ashraf. Death to Khamenei, hail to Rajavi.”

To fully grasp the significance of these actions, one must recall the regime’s triumphant declarations in the aftermath of the 2013 massacre. Top Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders hailed the slaughter as a “strategic victory” and a “divine and revolutionary revenge,” believing they had achieved the “annihilation” of the PMOI. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei thought that by murdering 52 unarmed PMOI members in cold blood, he could extinguish the flame of Ashraf forever.

He was catastrophically wrong. The promise made by Iranian Resistance leader Massoud Rajavi that the spirit of Ashraf would multiply into “a thousand Ashrafs” has been decisively fulfilled. That defiant slogan has evolved into a tangible, nationwide network of Resistance Units. The message displayed by these units on this anniversary—”Ashraf was drowned in blood. But its fire was not extinguished and from its blood emerged a thousand Ashrafs”—transforms the regime’s perceived victory into a story of its own strategic failure.

The activities marking the 12th anniversary of the Camp Ashraf massacre are a powerful testament to the indestructible nature of the Iranian people’s quest for liberty. The regime’s brutal tactics failed to silence the call for freedom. Instead, the sacrifice of the 52 martyrs ignited a movement that now operates deep inside Iran, challenging the mullahs’ tyranny daily. The epic of Ashraf’s resistance continues, heralding the victory of a generation that, inspired by their heroes, will not rest until Iran is free.
