Live report: Iran’s nationwide uprising enters day 6, funeral of martyrs turns into anti-regime protest in Kuhdasht

Live report | Friday, January 2, 2026

The nationwide uprising in Iran against the religious dictatorship entered its sixth consecutive day on Friday, January 2, 2026. Sparked by a devastating economic collapse, with the national currency plummeting to historic lows against the dollar, the protests that began in the Grand Bazaar of Tehran have now engulfed the entire country. What started as an outcry against poverty and inflation has rapidly evolved into a revolution demanding the overthrow of the regime.

As the uprising persists, the clerical regime has resorted to lethal force. On the fifth day, Thursday, January 1, the protests saw an unprecedented expansion. From the strikes at Tehran’s wholesale markets to street clashes in Isfahan, Mashhad, Shiraz, Qom, and Kermanshah, the Iranian people confronted the regime’s suppressive apparatus directly. Security forces were forced to retreat in multiple locations as youth set fire to Basij bases and police vehicles. The crackdown was particularly bloody in Lordegan and Fuladshahr, where regime forces opened fire on civilians.

Day six roundup: Uprising engulfs Tehran districts and provincial capitals; police station under siege in Marvdasht

On January 2, 2026, the sixth day of the nationwide uprising, the conflict between the Iranian people and the regime reached a perilous new height. What began earlier in the day with funerals transforming into protests has evolved into widespread nightly urban warfare. In Fars and Lorestan provinces, these gatherings escalated into direct confrontations, while in Tehran, the unrest spilled into major residential districts, signaling a loss of control by the security apparatus.

Key highlights for today:

  • Siege of Police Station No. 11 in Marvdasht: The city of Marvdasht witnessed the most intense clashes of the day. Following the funeral of martyr Khodadad Shirvani, which erupted into chants of “Death to Khamenei,” protesters surrounded and attacked Police Station No. 11. Reports indicate a volatile standoff, with regime mercenaries firing live ammunition at civilians from the rooftops of the station and the nearby Bank Sepah.
  • Live fire on protesters in Yasuj: In southwest Iran, security forces opened fire on demonstrators holding nightly rallies. Despite the lethal crackdown, the brave people of Yasuj refused to disperse, chanting “This is the year of blood, Seyyed Ali [Khamenei] will be overthrown” and “This nation will not be a nation until the mullahs are gone.”
  • Tehran uprising expands to neighborhoods: The protests have spread beyond the commercial centers to key residential districts of the capital. Residents in Naziabad, Khaksefid, Narmak, and Tehranpars took to the streets, chanting “Down with Khamenei” and “Death to the dictator,” proving the regime’s inability to contain the capital.
  • Security forces overpowered in Hamedan: In western Iran, locals launched massive nightly rallies. Field reports indicate that the sheer size of the crowd overwhelmed the security apparatus, which failed to disperse the demonstrators as they marched through the city.
  • Qom rises for the second night: In a continued blow to the regime’s ideological legitimacy, the city of Qom saw intense protests for the second consecutive night. At Towhid Square, demonstrators resisted security forces and chanted “Death to Khamenei.”
  • People of Kuhdasht reclaim martyr’s body: In a display of immense collective courage, the people of Kuhdasht thwarted the regime’s attempt to hijack the funeral of Amirhesam Khodayari-Fard. When security forces tried to seize the martyr’s body, the crowd resisted and successfully reclaimed him to perform the burial themselves. Additionally, the martyr’s father struck a blow to the regime’s propaganda machine by publicly stating his son “had no connection with the Basij.”
  • Political prisoners call for the “burial of the dictatorship”: From the dungeons of Evin and Ghezel Hesar prisons, political prisoners issued defiant statements. Prisoners on death row told university students that “the time has come to bury the dictatorship of the mullahs and the Shah,” while inmates in Evin declared that the regime is nearing the “dustbin of history.”
  • Resistance Units intensify activities: PMOI Resistance Units across the country, including in Tehran, Mashhad, and Isfahan, amplified the people’s demands with slogans rejecting all forms of dictatorship. Their placards and graffiti, reading “Down with the oppressor, be it the Shah or the Mullahs,” reflect the movement’s goal of establishing a democratic republic.

Update—19:30 CET

As night falls on the sixth day of the uprising, the protests have intensified and spread to residential districts across the capital and major provincial centers. Reports indicate that security forces are struggling to contain the expanding unrest, resorting to live fire in the southwest while facing total defiance in the west.

Yasuj: Security Forces Open Fire on Nightly Rallies
In Yasuj, southwest Iran, the situation has turned violent. Security forces opened fire on demonstrators who had gathered for nightly rallies to protest the catastrophic economic conditions and political repression. Despite the use of lethal force and extensive measures to prevent assemblies, the brave people of Yasuj refused to disperse. Large crowds continued to chant radical slogans, including, “This nation will not be a nation until the mullahs are gone” and “This is the year of blood, Seyyed Ali [Khamenei] will be overthrown!”

Tehran: Uprising Spreads to Multiple Districts
The capital has seen a surge in activity tonight, with protests erupting in several key districts simultaneously, signaling that the regime’s suppression in the bazaar has failed to quell the movement:

  • Naziabad: Protesters chanted “Down with Khamenei!”
  • Khaksefid: Locals rallied with the chant, “This is the year of blood, Seyyed Ali [Khamenei] will be overthrown!”
  • Narmak & Tehranpars: Residents in these neighborhoods took to the streets, chanting “Death to the dictator!”

Protesters gathered at Towhid Square and other areas, resisting security forces dispatched to suppress them. According to field reports, the sheer size of the crowd has overwhelmed the security apparatus; regime forces have failed to contain the situation or disperse the demonstrators, who continue to march and chant anti-regime slogans.

The geographic scope of the uprising continues to widen:

  • Babol (Northern Iran): People held nightly rallies chanting “Death to the dictator!”
  • Hafshejan (Western Iran): Residents defied extensive security measures to hold their protest rallies.

Kuhdasht: People Reclaim Martyr’s Body, Father Debunks Regime Lies
In Kuhdasht, the funeral of Amirhesam Khodayari-Fard became a scene of heroic resistance. Security forces attempted to seize the martyr’s body to prevent the ceremony from turning into a protest. However, the brave residents stood firm, resisted the agents, and successfully reclaimed Amirhesam’s body to give him a proper burial.

Ziar and Zahedan: The Voice of the People
Reports coming in from Ziar (Isfahan Province) confirm that the brave people of this city took to the streets on Thursday, chanting against high prices and the regime officials responsible for the economic misery.

Kuhdasht: Funeral of a martyr turns into a massive protest
In Kuhdasht, Lorestan Province, a massive crowd gathered for the funeral of Amir-Hessam Khodayari-Fard, a brave youth who sacrificed his life for Iran’s freedom. The ceremony quickly transformed into a scene of direct confrontation with the regime. The angry mourners, chanting anti-regime slogans, expressed their revulsion toward the crimes of the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his suppressive forces. The funeral has marked a new beginning for the continuation of the uprising on its sixth day.

Funeral of Dariush Anasari, 37, murdered by regime security forces who directly opened fire on him on December 31 during the anti-regime protests.

Zahedan joins the nationwide uprising
In the southeast, the brave people of Zahedan took to the streets today, joining the nationwide movement. Demonstrators were heard chanting “Death to the dictator,” signaling their solidarity with the rest of the country and their determination to bring down the oppressor.

Political prisoners stand with the uprising: “We stand until the end”

As the streets of Iran burn with the fire of revolution, political prisoners have issued powerful messages of solidarity from behind bars, urging the people to continue their fight for freedom.

A group of political prisoners in Evin Prison issued a statement addressing the “heroic people of Iran.” They noted that for over 120 years, Iranians have fought against both colonialism and tyranny—whether by the Shah or the Mullahs. They highlighted that after 47 years of plunder and warmongering by the religious fascism, the people have been deprived of basic necessities.

The signatories declared: “The regime knows its overthrow is very near because the people have willed it… Just as you threw the Shah’s puppet regime into the dustbin of history in 1979, you will do the same to this anti-human regime.”

In another letter, three political prisoners currently on death row in Ghezel Hesar Prison sent a stirring message to university students. Praising the students for “lighting the fire of freedom,” they wrote: “The time has come to bury the dictatorship of the Sheikh and the Shah and for the sunrise of freedom and a democratic republic.” They emphasized that despite facing execution, they stand with the students in every moment of their uprising.

PMOI Resistance Units: “Down with the oppressor, be it the Shah or the Mullahs”

In tandem with the nationwide uprising, Resistance Units affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) have intensified their activities across the country. Through graffiti, placards, and posters, they are echoing the Iranian people’s desire for a democratic republic, rejecting both the current religious tyranny and a return to the monarchical dictatorship. Their messages included “Down with the oppressor, be it the shah or the mullahs,” “Neither Pahlavi, nor the supreme leader, yes to freedom and equality,” “No to crown, no to turban, the mullahs are done” and “Bazaaris are awake, they despise the shah and the mullahs.” They made it clear that “The first and last word: regime overthrow.”
