On May 9, a conference was held at the Stampa Hall in the Italian Parliament, where the statement “Support for Freedom and Resistance in Iran for Global Peace and Security” was presented. The statement received support from most of the representatives from various political parties in the Italian Parliament.
This statement, which was signed by the Vice President of Parliament, three Parliament Secretaries, 12 Heads of Commission, six Parliamentary Group Leaders, five Deputy Ministers, three former Deputy Prime Ministers, and one former Minister, calls on all governments to recognize the right of the Iranian people to resist against the regime and confront the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The statement is in support of the 10-point plan of Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of resistance of Iran (NCRI). It also calls for an investigation into Iranian officials responsible for the 1988 massacre of political prisoners and the designation of IRGC as a terrorist organization.
During this press conference, several notable individuals delivered speeches, including Senator Giulio Maria Terzi, the head of the European Union Policy Committee in the Italian Senate and former Foreign Minister of Italy, Emanuele Pozzolo, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Italian Parliament, Italian MP Naike Gruppioni and Elisabetta Zamparutti, former Member of Parliament and founder of Hands Off Cain.
Ms. Gruppioni said: “I want to begin this session with three words that are crucial to me, addressing my Iranian sisters: women, resistance, and freedom. Today, I want to clearly and firmly state this and reiterate women, resistance, and freedom.” She highlighted the vital role of women in the resistance movement against the regime, noting their courage in confronting injustices and inequalities. Reflecting on the female leadership of the Iranian Resistance, including Maryam Rajavi, MP Gruppioni expressed optimism for the future, envisioning a democratic Iran where gender equality is a reality.
Senator Terzi advocated for robust action in support of democratic resistance in Iran. He condemned the oppressive tactics of the Iranian regime, particularly the persecution of women. The Italian Senator highlighted the need for concrete steps to counter the regime’s destabilizing activities, including the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization.
Emanuele Pozzolo highlighted key points from a recent appeal signed by parliamentarians, including condemnation of human rights violations, endorsement of the NCRI’s political program, and the imperative to protect Iranian dissidents. He called for courage in recognizing the Iranian people’s political legitimacy to rebel against the oppressive regime.
In conclusion, Pozzolo urged swift action to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, echoing sentiments expressed by previous speakers.
Elisabetta Zamparutti commended Mrs. Maryam Rajavi‘s leadership as a beacon of “radical exceptionality” against the backdrop of Iran’s theocratic and misogynistic regime, and advocated for the inclusion of the IRGC in the list of terrorist organizations, Mrs. Zamparutti stressed the importance of recognizing the Iranian Resistance as a legitimate political movement
