Iran’s retirees resume protests for higher pensions and basic needs

Pensioners and retirees in various cities across Iran resumed their protests on Sunday, highlighting the pressing need for higher pensions and basic necessities in the face of rising living costs and government inaction.

In Isfahan, located in central Iran, retirees from the steel industry gathered once again to voice their demands for increased pensions commensurate with the escalating expenses of daily life. Their persistence reflects the ongoing struggle of retirees to maintain a decent standard of living.

Similarly, in Shush, situated in the southwest region of Iran, retirees and pensioners affiliated with the Social Security Organization took to the streets anew, calling on the government to adhere to its own laws by adjusting pensions to reflect current economic realities.

Iran’s retirees are facing a “mega crisis” in the country’s pension system, leading them to take to the streets in widespread protests. With pensions failing to keep up with soaring inflation, retirees are struggling to afford basic necessities and healthcare. Compounding their woes is the government’s rampant corruption and mismanagement of pension funds, which has left the system on the brink of collapse. Chanting slogans like “Pensioner dies but does not accept humiliation,” the retirees are demanding that the government take urgent action to address the crisis and provide them with the dignified retirement they deserve after a lifetime of work.

The sentiment reverberated in Kermanshah, located in western Iran, where retirees of the Social Security Organization convened for their weekly protests, underscoring their unwavering resolve to secure improved pensions to meet their essential needs.

Meanwhile, in Arak, central Iran, retirees continued their protest rallies, expressing discontent over the government’s failure to align pensions with the soaring costs of living, thereby exacerbating financial hardships for retirees.

The Iranian regime’s own laws require it to adjust pensions in line with the rising cost of living, but the regime has failed to fulfill this obligation. Despite soaring inflation, which has driven up the prices of food and other necessities, the government has only announced a 20% increase in pensions and salaries, which is far from sufficient to keep up with the skyrocketing cost of living. Retirees are struggling to make ends meet, with many reporting that they can only afford to buy the bare essentials.

In Ahvaz, another city in the southwest, retirees and pensioners echoed similar sentiments as they rallied for higher pensions and basic necessities, highlighting the imperative for the government to address their legitimate grievances promptly.

The scene was no different in Dezful, also located in the southwest, where retirees and pensioners reiterated their demands for increased pensions and essential provisions mandated by the government’s own statutes. Their persistent advocacy underscores the urgency of the situation for retirees nationwide.

In Isfahan, the retirees of the steel industry held similar protest rallies as the regime has failed to address their most basic needs.

In Zabol, a city in southeast Iran, drivers joined the chorus of discontent, staging a protest rally against the government’s decision to reduce subsidized fuel rations. The demonstration highlights broader concerns about economic policies impacting various segments of the population.

The resurgence of protests among retirees and other groups across multiple cities underscores the deepening socioeconomic challenges facing Iranians. As the government grapples with widespread discontent, the imperative for meaningful reforms to address the plight of retirees and ensure economic stability becomes increasingly urgent.

As these protests continue, their impact extends beyond individual grievances, serving as a barometer of broader discontent and the pressing need for substantive change to safeguard the welfare and dignity of all Iranians.
