Iran, January 2, 2020—Protests continued in several Iranian cities over economic woes and government corruption despite heavy security measures by the regime to avoid the eruption of further uprisings.
On Tuesday, a group of bakers from Qazvin held a demonstration in front of the governor’s office, protesting the current price of bread. One of the bakers said, “While the price of all goods, including gasoline, have increased, the price of bread hasn’t changed. This is causing problems for the livelihoods of bakers.”
The regime increased the price of gasoline by 300 percent in November, after which mass anti-regime protests erupted across the country. While Iranian officials have promised not to raise the price of other goods, they have presented no plans as to how they will solve the problems of thousands of businesses that will see a sudden rise in their operations costs due to the gasoline price hike.
Protest by bakers in Qazvin
In Kerman, the workers of the Zarand Minerals Company held a demonstration protesting their employment status being converted from permanent to temporary. The company’s managers have used various methods to force the workers to accept this change to their work contract. The protesting workers stopped working and held a rally at the complex, located at 7 km of the Zarand-Kerman highway.
On Monday, the drivers of the driving school of Joveyn county, Razavi Khorasan province, went on strike in protest to the shortage of gasoline. The drivers declared that they will continue their strike for several days.
On Wednesday, the students of Shiraz Industrial University held a demonstration in protest to the repressive measures adopted by security forces and government policies meant to further plunder the wealth of the students.
During the demonstration, which was held in front of the university’s management, the students chanted:
“No to garrison, no to trade center, yes to university.”
“Students will die, but they will not give in to disgrace.”
The protesters demanded the resignation of the university’s deputy president.

Also on Wednesday, a group of nurses in Mashhad held a demonstration in front of the governor’s office in protest to unpaid wages.
These nurses have not received their wages for more than 14 months.
The demonstration took place at the same time that regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei was meeting with a select group of nurses on the occasion of Iran’s Nurse Day.
Delayed and unpaid wages have become a constant source of protest by workers in different segments of Iranian society.
