Iran, June 27, 2020—Over 61,800 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 340 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Saturday afternoon local time, June 27. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 10,364, around a sixth of the actual figure.
The death toll in various provinces include: 4,720 in Khuzestan, 3,670 in Razavi Khorasan, 3,145 in Gilan, 2,228 in Lorestan, 1,575 in Golestan, 635 in North Khorasan, 580 in Hormozgan, 561 in Bushehr, and 415 in Ilam. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Medical specialists in Tehran are saying the novel coronavirus is expanding at a “horrific” rate. Many of the hospitals, including Khomeini Hospital, are once again filled with patients. It is worth noting that most of the patients receive only a quick visit and are sent home to be quarantined there.
Only critical patients, meaning a maximum of 20 percent, are hospitalized. Furthermore, many of the chronic patients that are in need of special treatment are dying due to the fact that the ICU sections are full. Physicians are saying if urgent action is not taken in Tehran the number of people seeking medical care will quickly surpass the 100,000 mark and the number of deaths, especially in southern Tehran, will escalate very quickly.
In a video conference with the regime’s judiciary officials, Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei acknowledged the new rise is COVID-19 cases and claimed it was the result of “some people and officials” taking the circumstances “too lightly.” Khamenei went on to “criticize some people who thought COVID-19 had come to an end.”
It is worth noting that on March 3 of this year Khamenei said, “This is not such a major issue and there have been worse… This will not last so long in our country and it will all be forgotten.”
On Saturday, the spokesperson for the regime’s Health Ministry reported 125 deaths and 2,456 new cases in the last 24-hour period. A total of 2,928 people are in ICU, she added. “The provinces of Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Kuridstan, Hormozgan, West Azerbaijan, and Razavi Khorasan are in red status and East Azerbaijan, Sistan & Baluchistan, Bushehr, Lorestan and Golestan are in alarming conditions,” she added.
The state-run ISNA news agency quoted Iraj Harirchi, the deputy health minister, as saying, “Every 13 minutes, one person dies of coronavirus in the country, and every 33 seconds, one person contracts the virus… Many counties are in code-red conditions.” It is worth noting that Harirchi is one of the key officials who downplays the coronavirus stats, and his acknowledgment of the rapid pace of contamination speaks volumes about the real spread of the virus across the country.
In Zanjan province, the dean of the medical sciences university confirmed on Saturday that 343 coronavirus cases were registered on Friday, up from 200 in the previous day, IRNA reported. “Previously, 20 percent of tests were positive, but now, this figure has reached 40 percent,” he said. “In the next few days, we’ll need a considerable number of new beds. The medical sciences university is on red alert and all furloughs have been canceled. The number of non-hospitalized coronavirus patients has increased nine-fold.”
In Golestan province, the dean of the medical sciences university reported that 20 percent of coronavirus patients are in critical conditions and have been hospitalized in the intensive care unit, according to Asr-e Iran website. “Currently, half of the area and population of Golestan are in code-red situation,” he said.
In Hormozgan province, the dean of the medical sciences university confirmed that 280 healthcare workers have contracted coronavirus, ISNA reported. “This week and the next will be very dangerous in Hormozgan,” he said. Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), quoted the deputy-dean of the same university as saying, “More than 10,000 people across the province have contracted COVID-19… There are 510 hospitalized patients and the hospitals have no space to admit more patients in the next few days.”
In Ilam province, the health deputy of the medical science university said, “The number of cases and deaths in Dehloran is very worrying. The number of cases in this week is 4-5 times greater than in February… In the past week, the number of new cases has been in the hundreds every day.” (Source: IRNA, June 27)
In Kurdistan province, the dean of the medical sciences university said, “We can’t add more beds or allocate the entire Towhid hospital to coronavirus patients in order to prevent a drop in oxygen levels,” ISNA reported. The dean added that only 200 beds can be allocated to coronavirus patients, because if more patients are hospitalized, “the three oxygen concentrators that we have will not be able to supply their needs.”
In Qazvin province, the caretaker of the medical sciences university confirmed a steep incline in the number of cases in the past two weeks, ILNA reported. “The continuation of this trend is dangerous and will cause problems for the hospital’s heart and neurology sectors.”
An MP from Ardakan, Yazd province, said, “Ardakan has a shortage of 160 hospital beds and 140 medical staff,” ISNA reported.
One of the aspects of Iran’s coronavirus outbreak has been the growing number of youth and children who are contracting the virus. Health officials in different provinces are confirming an increasing number of cases among very young children.
