Iran coronavirus update: Over 496,600 deaths, Interior Minister voices concern over omicron

Over 496,600 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Monday afternoon local time, January 10. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,915, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 116,030 in Tehran, 34,420 in Isfahan, 29,985 in Khuzestan, 18,770 in Fars, 18,723 in West Azerbaijan, 17,168 in East Azerbaijan, 14,488 in Alborz, 13,695 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 10,805 in Golestan, 6540 in Semnan, 6320 in Ardabil, 4743 in Ilam, and 4391 in South Khorasan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Monday as 37 deaths and 1932 new cases. Furthermore, 1692 patients are in ICUs and 298 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“Considering the spread of omicron there is increasing concern about the number of patients rising and more troubles for the people. The spread of this variant is concerning,” said regime Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi on Monday, according to the Tasnim news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force.

“Around 27 percent of all the tests conducted during the past week were related to omicron. This increase indicates that in the course of the next few weeks we can reach another coronavirus peak. The Scientific Committee intends to have the reopening of schools and universities be definitely postponed,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Monday, according to the state-run Mardom Salari daily.

“Four cases of omicron is confirmed and from this day forward the coronavirus variant in Chaharhmahal & Bakhtiari province will now be considered omicron,” said the deputy dean of Shahrekord Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“The number of confirmed omicron cases identified in Arak and other cities has increased to 13. This possibility exists that we will witness an omicron peak in [Markazi] province,” said the deputy dean of Arak Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“To this day three omicron cases have been identified in Lorestan province,” according to a statement released on Monday by the Lorestan Medical Sciences University.

“With 97 new patients hospitalized in the past 24 hours, we currently have 420 patients hospitalized, of which 73 are in ICUs,” according to a Monday statement released by the Shiraz Medical Sciences University on Monday regarding Fars province, according to the Mehr news agency.

“There are currently 333 coronavirus patients hospitalized, of which 36 are under ventilators,” said the dean of West Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the IKNA news agency.
