Iran coronavirus update: Over 496,300 deaths, omicron could become peak in 2-3 weeks

Over 496,300 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Sunday afternoon local time, January 9. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,878, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 115,980 in Tehran, 40,000 in Razavi Khorasan, 18,015 in Mazandaran, 17,210 in Gilan, 13,377 in Gilan, 9203 in Hamedan, and 8187 in Kurdistan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Sunday as 31 deaths and 1480 new cases. Furthermore, 1775 patients are in ICUs and 226 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“Omicron has begun its spread throughout our society, and we may face a significant rise in the next few weeks. Some provinces are facing more threats than others. These include Hormozgan, Tehran, Razavi Khorasan, Isfahan, and Mazandaran, as provinces that need to be more careful about omicron,” said the head of Infectious Diseases Center in the regime’s Health Ministry on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Omicron is spreading and in the next two or three weeks, it will most probably become a peak. Reopening schools and universities doesn’t appear to be a logical decision. If schools are opened and should people need ICUs, it can create a crisis across the country,” said the secretary of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The threat of omicron is right around the corner. The numbers are rising and considering the characteristics of this virus, if we do see a rise, it will be in exponential fashion. Therefore, in the next two to three weeks we may have a peak before us,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Forty people in [Isfahan] province have contracted omicron. Our forecast shows that in the next two- or three-weeks omicron will become the main coronavirus variant in Isfahan,” said the spokesperson of Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Sunday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“Up to yesterday, we had four confirmed cases of omicron. We currently have 476 cases confirmed across the country, indicating the depth of the crisis in this field,” said the dean of Golestan Medical Sciences University on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Many officials are using domestic vaccines. Many ministers and I have also used domestic vaccines,” says the Health Minister. However, their vaccine cards indicate they have received the Russian Sputnik vaccine, according to a Sunday piece published by the state-run Aftab-e Yazd daily.
