Iran, April 5, 2019 – As flash floods threaten many locals across Khuzestan Province in southwest Iran, people are seen in an exodus evacuating their homes and seeking refuge in safe areas.
13,000 locals are reportedly evacuating villages around the city of Hamidiyeh in this province while around 5,000 people in a forest area are in dire need of emergency aid, according to local officials.
Around 300 residents of a village have been surrounded by floodwaters for the past four days and are in desperate need of emergency aid, an official of the Albunis village said. Above average rains are forecasted for Khuzestan Province and more importantly, dangerous rainfall is expected this coming week. These are dangerous circumstances considering the fact that rivers and dams across this vast and oil-rich province are already overflowing.
As critical conditions are escalating, the mullahs’ Crisis Management Organization is announcing it is doubtful that the main road linking the cities of Poldokhtar and Khorramabad in Lorestan Province will be repaired any time soon.
Conditions will continue to deteriorate due to the fact that the gates of Karkheh Dam have opened and the water volume is continuously increasing, said the Friday prayer imam of Susangerd, a city in Khuzestan Province. Many villages near local rivers and downstream are threatened by floodwaters and locals have been ordered to evacuate. As this trend continues, various areas of Susangerd will be threatened and some areas of the city have been evacuated to prevent further damages, this official added.
Around 100 schools in the same number of villages across Khuzestan Province are facing the threat of being engulfed by floodwaters. Around 60 schools are reporting floodwaters entering their perimeters and classrooms.
