Why does Iran’s regime threaten to close the Strait of Hormuz?

Analysis by PMOI/MEK

Iran, July 21, 2018 – On July 3rd at a press conference in Switzerland, Iranian regime President Hassan Rouhani reacted to U.S. pledges to stop Tehran’s oil exports.

“It doesn’t make sense for Iran’s oil to not be exported while the region is exporting its oil. If you could, do so and face the results,” he said.

Many political and press analysts consider Rouhani’s remarks as a threat to close the Strait of Hormuz.

This is nothing new. It was first mentioned during the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s and yet never was there any practical action. During the tenure of former Iranian regime President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, this issue was raised again as Tehran faced increasing sanctions. Again, no practical actions were taken and Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei succumbed to global demands and came to the negotiating table with a very weak hand. The end result was the so-called Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Of course, US President Donald Trump brought this to an end by exiting the highly flawed deal.

This time around it is Rouhani who is again raising of the subject of closing the Strait of Hormuz.

Following Rouhani’s threats, Revolutionary Guards Quds Force commander Qassem Suleimani sent him a message of gratitude and described the outcome of oil sanctions against Iran as a “source of pride.” Ending his message with a signature “Your brother, Qassem Suleimani,” he specifically said, “I kiss your hand for these timely, firm and correct remarks, and we are at your service for any policy that is in the establishment’s interest…”

Suleimani’s message provides military backing to Rouhani’s political threat, sending this message to its correspondents that the president’s message is not hollow.”

In the regime media, other threatening remarks were heard from deputy parliament speaker Ali Mottahari, speaking of closing the Strait of Hormuz. Other regime figures were seen showing a variety of reactions to this subject.

“The President and the Foreign Ministry must explain if these remarks mean closing the Strait of Hormuz and launching a military conflict or not,” said Ali Khorram, a former Iranian regime diplomat. “However, I believe the reactions from the U.S. and Saudi Arabia to Rouhani’s remarks is that they consider it a military threat and have gone as far as saying we have the military capability to keep the Strait of Hormuz open… Did Rouhani think of this before and was this coordinated? If this threat becomes practical, will Iran be pulled into a military conflict? Then we have to ask will Iran be militarily capable of keeping the Strait of Hormuz [closed]? Rouhani’s remarks must be evaluated closely and the government announces its formal position in this regard.”

US officials did not remain silent. The CENTCOM spokesman precisely said US forces and their regional allies are ready to guarantee naval commuting and trade flow based on international law regulations.

What is the truth?

Considering the backbreaking impact of upcoming US sanctions, all figures in the Iranian regime are desperately searching for solutions to maybe save their apparatus from this calamity. The first and most recognizable method used by the mullahs’ entire regime is to make threats against regional countries and the international community.

Iran’s regime resorts to such remarks to cloak its own domestic crises. Meddling in other countries is another such tactic. Insisting on continuing the war in Syria and politically/financially supporting the Houthis in Yemen, Iraqi militias, and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

The harsh reality is that the mullahs, following six months of continuous protests inside the country and growing support for the Iranian opposition as the regime’s imminent alternative, sees its overthrow very close and is desperately searching to prevent the inevitable.

This is especially true regarding the recent Iranian opposition convention in Paris and vast international support this opposition enjoys as the sole alternative for the Iranian regime. This has Tehran terrified more than ever before.

The mullahs’ intended to resort to a terrorist measure to prevent this rally. Their plot failed and their diplomat-terrorist is now arrested.

Therefore, to compensate for this heavy setback the Iranian regime is now resorting to threats of closing the Strait of Hormuz, seeking concessions from the international community.

The world, and especially Middle East countries, should not pay any attention to this regime’s threats, and instead provide support to the Iranian people and their organized opposition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

This movement is the true and powerful alternative at hand to replace the ruling regime. Supporting and recognizing this initiative will further plunge the mullahs’ regime into their endless series of crises and render its overthrow by the Iranian people and their organized NCRI opposition movement, to realize peace and stability in Iran and across the Middle East.
