Iran, July 8, 2019 – A 5.7 magnitude earthquake near the city of Masjed Soleyman shook large areas of Iran’s oil-rich Khuzestan Province at around 11:30 am local time on Monday. The depth of the quake at the epicenter is reported at 17 kilometers.
The city of Ahvaz is located 104 kilometers from the epicenter and Shahr-e Kord is located 134 kilometers from the quake center.
The regime’s Tasnim news agency, associated with the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force, cites the mayor of Masjed Soleyman saying one individual was killed and 20 others are wounded.
Various damages are being reported from areas across the city of Masjed Soleyman.
Acting director of the Khuzestan Province Power Company says the quake is disrupting electricity distribution to the city of Masjed Soleyman and other neighboring areas.
Various roads connecting this city to nearby districts have been blocked due to the earthquake. Three aftershocks measuring 3.9, 4 and 4.7 magnitudes have also been reported following the 5.7 magnitude quake that was felt as far as Kuwait.
The cities of Isfahan, Shahre Kord, Ilam, Hamedan, Yasuj, Kermanshah and Shiraz are all reporting feeling the earthquake. Various reports are indicating various facilities and numerous homes suffering significant damages in Masjed Soleyman. 56 villages, home to 5,580 people, are located at a 15-kilometer radius of the quake epicenter.
Locals in the earthquake hit areas are extremely concerned, knowing people of Sar-pole-Zahab in Kermanshah Province are still living in tents and trailers, nearly two years after the quake.
