Iranian regime denies critical medical care to political prisoner Fatemeh Mosanna

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, February 1, 2021—Iranian political prisoner Fatemeh Mosanna is in critical health conditions and regime authorities are denying her medical treatment, according to reports obtained by the Iranian Resistance from inside Iran.

Mosanna, who is incarcerated in the notorious Evin prison, suffers from chronic colitis and severe migraines and has been suffering from intestinal bleeding since summer. Doctors say that she isn’t physically fit for prison conditions and her continued incarceration in this condition will further deteriorate her health.

Ms. Mosanna lost consciousness due to hemorrhage on August 19 and prison authorities inevitably transferred her to the Taleghani hospital in Tehran. But during her stay at the hospital, her hands and feet were chained to the bed. She was returned to prison seven days later despite objections by doctors and medical staff that her examinations and treatment not being completed.

She became ill again on September 7, less than two weeks after her forced discharge from the hospital. She was taken to the hospital for endoscopy and colonoscopy, but again, she was forcibly returned to prison before her examination was completed.

In December, the doctor at Taleghani hospital reiterated that Fatemeh was not physically fit for the prison’s conditions and demanded that she undergo a forensic diagnosis, but Amin Vaziri, the prosecutor of Evin prison, refused the request.

Fatemeh is the sister of Ali, Mostafa, and Morteza Mosanna, three members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) executed by the mullahs’ regime in the 1980s. In February 2012, Mosanna, along with her husband Hassan Sadeghi and their two children were arrested while they were holding a mourning ceremony for Gholamhossein Sadeghi, Hassan’s father, an MEK member who died in Camp Liberty, Iraq, due to a medical blockade imposed by the Iran-backed Iraqi government.

They were released on bail after a while. But Mosanna and Sadeghi were summoned to the 26th branch of the regime’s so-called Revolution Court and were charged with moharebeh (enmity against God) because of their support for the MEK. They were each sentenced to 15 years in prison and their belongings were confiscated by the regime. They were sent to jail in 2015 to serve their cruel prison sentence.

In a statement on Saturday, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) expressed concern about the conditions of Fatemeh Mosanna called on the international community to intervene and take urgent action in Mosanna’s case.

“The Iranian Resistance draws the attention of the United Nations Secretary-General, the UN Human Rights Council and the UN High Commissioner as well as other human rights organizations to the plight of Fatemeh Mosanna, and urges their urgent action to ensure her release from the prison. It once again reiterates on the need to send a fact-finding mission to inspect prisons in Iran and meet with prisoners, especially political prisoners and female prisoners,” the NCRI wrote.

On Sunday, Iranian communities around the world held an online campaign on #SOSFatemeh on Twitter, drawing attention to Mosanna’s case on calling for immediate action by the international community.

Growing wave of executions in Iran

The regime is ramping up repressive measures in Iran’s prisons. On Saturday, the regime executed Baluch political prisoner Javid Dehghan Khald, 31, in Zahedan Central Prison, under the charge of moharebeh. Dehghan was brutally beaten by prison authorities and forced to confess under torture. The confessions were then used to sentence him to death.

The execution came despite loud international calls for the death sentence to be revoked. “The Iranian authorities must immediately halt the execution of Javid Dehghan, a member of Iran’s disadvantaged Baluchi ethnic minority,” Amnesty had declared in a statement issued two days before the execution.

The United Nations Human Rights office had also called for the halt of sentence and condemned the regime’s wave of executions since December.

The NCRI had also raised concern over the treatment of Dehghan during his time in prison. “Javid Dehghan’s case is said to be under the control of the IRGC and the mullahs’ court has rejected his lawyer’s request for an appeal on the advice of the IRGC who has called for his speedy execution,” the NCRI wrote in a statement that called on the international community to take urgent action on the case.

Two days before executing Dehghan, the regime hanged political prisoner Ali Motayeri in Sheyban prison, Ahvaz. Motayeri too was forced to confess under torture and was charged with the murder of two agents of the Basij, a paramilitary force used by the regime to suppress protests and dissidents.

In a statement, the NCRI warned about an uptick in executions in Iran, with eight hangings in one week alone. “The clerical regime, in fear of the escalation of the people’s protests caused by repression, poverty, and Coronavirus, is desperately trying to control the situation by creating an atmosphere of terror and intimidation through stepping up clampdown, torture, and execution,” the NCRI wrote.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the NCRI, also urged the international community to intervene and save the lives of death-row prisoners. Madam Rajavi also called for the Iranian regime’s abysmal human rights dossier to be referred to the United Nations Security Council.

“This regime is a disgrace to contemporary humanity and must be isolated by the international community,” Mrs. Rajavi emphasized.
