Iran: Hospital staff hold protest rally in a city west of Tehran

Iran, May 12, 2019 – A group of hospital personnel in the so-called Khomeini Hospital in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, capital of Iran, rallied on Saturday protesting delayed paychecks and unstable job status.

Iran witnessed more than 400 protests and strikes during the month of March of 2019. These protest movements took place in 104 cities, towns, villages, industrial compounds, and business areas. According to the statistics, on the average 13 protest movements took place on every single day.

The number of protest movements on March exceeded the previous month by 166 which includes a 3 continuous-day protest movement by teachers.

It should be noted that due to the devastating flash floods in the last third part of March, a great amount of attention focused on the floods.

From the 415 counts of protest actions in the month of March, 85 protest actions were involved by workers, 12 by plundered people whose money have been robbed by government-affiliated financial institutions, 11 counts of protest movements by pensioners, 212 counts by teachers, 5 counts by students, 7 counts by farmers, 4 by bazaar merchants, 21 counts by prisoners including 14 counts of hunger strikes, and 58 protest actions by other sectors of the society.

The content of the March protests in Iran are as follows:

1-The laborers

Eighty-five protest actions by workers in March were carried out by 36 cities, business areas, and industrial compounds which accounted for the average of 3 protest movements per day. The central reason for these protests were unpaid wages from a few months to even one and a half year, insurance nonpayment, living conditions, being laid off from jobs, low payments under the poverty line, and insecure jobs.

 

2- The plundered people

People losing their savings to the government-run financial institutions accounted for 12 protest actions in 2 cities. It included plundered people by Caspian institution in Tehran and Mashhad, plundered people by Padideh financial institution in the northeastern city of Mashhad, plundered people by Alborz financial institution in Tehran and a number of other government-affiliated financial institutions.

 

3-Pensioners

11 Protest movements took place by pensioners in a number of places included in Markazi (central) province, Arak, Gilan, Azerbaijan, Shush, Ahvaz, Isfahan, and Tehran.

 

4-Teachers

The month of March also witnessed 8 protest movements by teachers in 7 cities, including a 3-day nationwide teachers’ strike. The strike alone took place in 59 cities accounting for 204 protest actions. These protests were against the lack of government response to their demands.

 

5-Students

Five protest movements were carried out by students in 3 major cities including in Tehran Khajeh Nasir University.

 

6-Farmers

Seven major protest actions were carried out by farmers in 5 cities. Some of these rallies continued for days. These cities included Isfahan, Bandar-Abbas, Naghade, Minab, and Oshnavieh.

 

7-Bazaar Merchants

Four protest actions in 4 cities were carried out by bazaar merchants. These protests took place in Tehran, Tabriz, Ahvaz, and Khorramabad. The majority of these rallies were in response to the high cost of living, unstable value of Iran’s currency, and below the average sell.

8-Other sectors of society

Iran witnessed 85 counts of protest movements in March in 31 cities. The most important ones were:

In Shiraz and other cities hit by destructive flashfloods against government inaction and poor response.

Truck drivers of the city of Saveh against high costs of parts and insufficient gas ration.

Farmers from all over Iran gathered in Tehran demanding pay raise.

Ahvaz oil drilling company workers against nonpayment of 6-month salary.

Hospital workers, including nurses and doctors against low wages and other careers.
