Iran: 6 prisoners transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for execution

Analysis by PMOI/MEK

Iran, February 3, 2021—At least six death-row prisoners in Karaj Prison and Qarchak Prison, Varamin, have been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their execution, according to reports obtained from inside Iran. One of these prisoners is Zahra Esmaili, incarcerated in Qarchak prison. According to sources, Esmaili was informed of her sentence in one-and-half months ago.

At the same time, five prisoners in Karaj Prison were sent to solitary confinement. Two of the prisoners have been identified as Milad Tajik, 23, and Mohammad Chazani.

Iran has the highest rate of executions per capita according to international surveys. In 2020, there were at least 236 executions officially reported in Iran. This includes two juvenile offenders, people who were under 18 at the time of their arrest. One execution was carried out in public.

It is worth noting that the regime also executes many people in secret.

The news comes as the regime has been on a killing spree, executing dozens of people in the span of a few weeks.

On January 30, the regime executed Baluch political prisoner Javid Dehghan Khald, 31, in Zahedan Central Prison, under the charge of moharebeh (waging war on God). Dehghan was brutally beaten by prison authorities and forced to confess under torture. The confessions were then used to sentence him to death.

On January 28, the regime hanged political prisoner Ali Motayeri in Sheyban prison, Ahvaz. Motayeri too was forced to confess under torture and was charged with the murder of two agents of the Basij, a paramilitary force used by the regime to suppress protests and dissidents.

On January 27, the regime executed a female prisoner in Sanandaj, Kurdistan province.

On January 25, the regime executed Mehdi Ali Hosseini, a 30-year-old wrestler from Andimeshk, southwest Iran, had been in prison since 2015. The regime executed Hosseini despite international calls for sparing his life.

In a statement on January 30, the NCRI warned about an uptick in executions in Iran, with eight hangings in one week alone. “The clerical regime, in fear of the escalation of the people’s protests caused by repression, poverty, and Coronavirus, is desperately trying to control the situation by creating an atmosphere of terror and intimidation through stepping up clampdown, torture, and execution,” the NCRI wrote.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the NCRI, also urged the international community to intervene and save the lives of death-row prisoners. Madam Rajavi also called for the Iranian regime’s abysmal human rights dossier to be referred to the United Nations Security Council.

“This regime is a disgrace to contemporary humanity and must be isolated by the international community,” Mrs. Rajavi emphasized.
