Iran coronavirus update: Over 210,600 deaths, political disputes delaying vaccination effort

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, February 3, 2021—Over 210,600 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 480 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Wednesday afternoon local time, February 3. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 58,189 around a third of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 50,786 in Tehran, 13,410 in Isfahan, 10,470 in Khuzestan, 8677 in Mazandaran, 8553 in Lorestan, 8008 in East Azerbaijan, 6367 in Fars, 5419 in Golestan, 4674 in Kerman, 3125 in Semnan, 2220 in Hormozgan, 2176 in Ilam, 2119 in Bushehr, and 2016 in South Khorasan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Regime Health Minister Saied Namaki emphasized the country is in extremely difficult circumstances and expressed grave concerns about the status quo in Tehran. “In the coming weeks we may witness an increase in the number of daily Covid-19 deaths,” he said on Wednesday. “People are asking questions these days due to the good or bad intentions of some people,” he added in reference to the regime’s internal political disputes. “The issues that we are pursuing should not be politicized and the vaccine is one of these subjects. If some individuals are daydreaming about reaching certain positions in the regime, if they are accepted by the people, they will reach that certain position. But today health issues should not be politicized,” he emphasized, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

“The epidemic in some provinces, especially in Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan, indicates that these provinces have not been successful in declining their stats. Furthermore, it appears that some provinces, such as South Khorasan and Semnan, are on the verge of a new peak,” said a member of the Covid-19 Epidemiology Committee in the regime’s Health Ministry.

“Covid-19 does not have a permanent remedy and there is no medication for a complete uprooting and full cure of this illness. Vaccinating the entire society will take time,” said Alireza Zali, head of the Tehran Covid-19 Task Force on Tuesday. “Coronavirus will never be uprooted. Such an objective is out of consideration for the time being,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“During the past few weeks, we have once again witnessed an increase in the stats, and this is a warning sign regarding another increase in the virus in [Fars] province. A total of 561 coronavirus patients are currently hospitalized and the total death rate stands at 3151,” said the head of public relations at Fars Medical Sciences University on Tuesday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“All numbers indicate Semnan province has entered the fourth Covid-19 wave. Currently the cities of Semnan, Shahroud and Damghan are considered yellow zones, meaning conditions across the province are very fragile and once again we are heading into a crisis,” according to a Wednesday report wired by the Mehr news agency. “Stats from the Health Ministry confirm that the provinces of South Khorasan, Semnan and Golestan, alongside Mazandaran, are quite prone to entering a fourth wave and being registered as orange and red zones,” the report adds.

“The city of Juybar once again being registered as a red zone will result in the imposition of severe restrictions,” said the Juybar mayor, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency, following an increase in the number of Covid-19 patients in the city’s only hospital, which has been described as concerning.

“It doesn’t look like any country has such internal dispute over the vaccine as we see in Iran. Published news reports indicate official and legal institutions in other countries are approving and importing vaccines and are beginning their vaccination efforts. We, however, are still engulfed in sideline issues,” according to a Wednesday piece published in the state controlled Hamdeli daily. “All the while it is the people that are dying with each passing day,” the piece concludes.
