Rouhani continues to blame Covid-19 casualties on the people

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, September 27, 2020—While Iran is suffering from a high number of human casualties due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, regime president Hassan Rouhani once again outrageously blamed the people themselves for the third wave of the virus.

The Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) announced on Saturday, September 26, that over 110,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 444 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by its network inside the country. This is while the official death count declared by the regime stands at 25,394, around a fifth of the actual figure.

Laying the blame on the people

The country is facing a dramatic increase in the number of hospitalized patients, exhaustion of the medical staff, filled hospitals, and a high number of deaths. While previously Rouhani tried to portray the situation as normal, now he tries to blame the people for not having followed health instructions.

“Some people thought this is a disease like SARS that stays for a period of two, three, four, or five months and then it will be over… People said we are waiting for March when the weather becomes warm, then we can get rid of the illness. They had the impression that this is a disease like influenza… and it will create a public immunity,” said Rouhani dishonestly.

This while during the Coronavirus Task Force Committee meeting on March 18, Saeed Namaki, the regime’s Health Minister, had said, “If people tolerate for two weeks, in addition, to solving the illness, a very important factor for us will be the hot weather which will help us in controlling the disease… Like the SARS, this novel virus is very sensitive to the warm weather.”

While Rouhani and regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei were safe in their quarantined palaces, they recommended the policy of “herd immunity” for the rest of the population, especially the poor. But now that it has become evident their strategy has resulted in the current human catastrophe, they are blaming the people themselves for not following health instructions. “Only 48-53 percent of the people abided by the protocols,” Rouhani said on Saturday. “These numbers are low, and we call on the people to increase their cooperation so that we can overcome these stages. People not abiding by these protocols results in problems for us… We are announcing today that we are forced to increase the regulations and supervising measures.”

But what Rouhani didn’t say was his own government’s contribution—or lack thereof—in protecting the people from the dangerous disease.

Muharram mourning ceremonies, the main cause of the third wave

Rouhani did not mention that despite warnings by many experts and regime officials, his government proceeded with reopening public places, schools, and universities and allowed the Muharram mourning ceremonies to take place. According to state-run media, the situation of the whole country is red except in Kurdistan and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces, where Muharram ceremonies were not held. In addition, the high number of human casualties among students and teachers is the direct result of the early reopening of schools.

Rouhani also did not mention that the regime didn’t allocate enough budget to quarantine the people and the cities and he himself previously expressed fear of the coronavirus pandemic creating the grounds for another nationwide uprising. “If 2-3 million people die from coronavirus, it would be better than 30 million hungry people taking to the streets,” Rouhani had said.

Also, Khamenei very clearly said that production must resume, “whatever the price,” and he decided to send the people back to work and coronavirus minefields. His goal was to turn the coronavirus threat into an opportunity to maintain his regime. Rouhani did not say a word of condolence and sympathy to the families of the thousands of lives lost and the difficulties the Iranian people are facing. In addition to his inhuman nature and attitude, this behavior is very calculated as well since any regret for human losses will force him and Khamenei to spend their $ 200 billion wealth on the coronavirus crisis. Of the billion euros Khamenei had approved to be spent on the Covid-19 response, less than one-third has been given to the Health Ministry. The Health Ministry also acknowledged recently that the medical staff, who have been working day in day out to save lives, have not received their meager salary for months.

Rouhani’s solution

Rouhani tried not to take any responsibility by saying that the people should follow health instructions, the government will not provide service to those who do not wear masks, and that the government’s only commitment is to deal with those who do not follow instructions. But the reality is that the people reject the regime in its entire and blame the regime for the coronavirus tragedy and the root of all sufferings.

As is being written on walls and the streets in every city and town, the people of Iran know that the bigger virus plaguing Iran is the virus of the mullahs’ rule, and only when the regime is overthrown will there be hope for a return to health, peace, and security.
