On May 29, PMOI Resistance Units in the southeastern city of Zahedan carried out a courageous campaign of anti-regime activities. Amid a growing wave of state-sponsored executions and violence against dissidents, these activists took to public spaces to reject all forms of dictatorship, whether religious or monarchical.
The Resistance Units held placards displaying powerful messages that highlight the unwavering spirit of the Iranian people. Among the messages displayed in Zahedan were declarations that “the real battle against the ruling regime is taking place today in the ongoing uprisings of the Iranian people and the operations of the Resistance Units.”

The execution wave and the regime’s desperation
These activities in Zahedan serve as a direct defiance of the regime’s brutal use of capital punishment to mask its desperate domestic crises. The judiciary intends to carry out a bloody purge of the prisons. In recent weeks, the regime hanged eight members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), who were part of the Resistance Units.
Authorities have refused to return their bodies to their families, even imprisoning relatives simply for attempting to locate their graves. Furthermore, the regime has hanged between 17 and 20 young rebellious protesters arrested during the uprisings over the past two months.

However, this strategy of terror has completely backfired. The daily executions, driven by the regime’s sheer fear of the Iranian people and their uprisings, have failed to intimidate an outraged public. Instead, the supreme defiance of the PMOI members, who broadcast messages and sang anthems on the very brink of execution, has inspired Iran’s youth to resist even further. They pledge to press forward until this regime is overthrown.
The real battle: Resistance Units vs. a deadlocked regime
The regime is currently exploiting a foreign war to camouflage its own internal fractures and the deep crises at the summit of power. But as the Resistance Units noted in Zahedan, the fundamental conflict is not abroad; it is a 45-year battle between the ruling regime and the Iranian people. After crushing the January uprising, the regime now lives night and day in the nightmare of the next revolt.

The chief of the regime’s State Security Force recently announced that 6,500 people have been arrested since the war began, noting that 567 of them were connected to the PMOI. Despite this severe crackdown, the regime remains paralyzed. As a placard in Zahedan proclaimed: “Today, the regime is trapped in a deadlock: they can neither return to the status quo before the January uprising and its bloody crackdown, nor do they have any way forward.”
Neither shah nor mullah
The Resistance Units in Zahedan also made it unequivocally clear that the Iranian people will not accept any regression to past tyrannies. Currently, remnants of the Shah’s regime, which was overthrown by a popular revolution in 1979, are advocating for a return to monarchical dictatorship and the revival of the notorious SAVAK secret service.
Pushing back against this narrative, activists in Zahedan displayed powerful slogans rejecting opportunistic factions. Placards read, “Dictatorship remains dictatorship—whether wearing a turban or a crown,” and “Baluchestan is defiant and awake; it utterly rejects both the Shah and the mullahs.” Another message emphasized, “The core principle of ‘Neither Shah nor Mullah’ signifies the absolute rejection of all forms of dictatorship and dependency.”
The only way forward
The activities of the PMOI Resistance Units underscore that Iranian society is moving decidedly forward. The people of Iran aspire to achieve a democratic republic defined by the separation of religion and state, gender equality, progressive economic and social development, and autonomy for oppressed ethnic nationalities.
This vision is championed by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), which has announced a provisional government based on its Ten-Point Plan. As the Resistance Units in Zahedan declared to the world: “Replacing a fascist system with a pluralistic, democratic republic is the only way forward.” Through their unwavering courage, Iran’s youth continue to prove that no number of executions can extinguish the flame of resistance.
