As the clerical regime in Iran desperately attempts to quell dissent through an unprecedented wave of executions, its primary opposition, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), is meeting this brutality with unwavering defiance. Across the country, PMOI Resistance Units are escalating their activities, sending a clear message that the spirit of resistance cannot be extinguished by the gallows. Recent actions in Zahedan, the heart of Sistan and Baluchestan province, highlight a courageous counter-offensive against the regime’s campaign of terror.
The voice of defiance on the streets of Zahedan
On October 10, 2025, in the face of heightened state security and repression, Resistance Units in Zahedan took to the streets to directly challenge the regime’s machinery of death. They put up handwritten banners and posters with slogans that not only condemned the ongoing executions but also called for the overthrow of the ruling theocracy. The messages made it clear that the regime’s violence will only fuel further resistance, with placards reading, “The response to the murder and execution of political prisoners is a fiery uprising,” and “Khamenei is trying in vain to prevent the people’s uprising and the overthrow of his regime with executions and massacres.”

Crucially, these activists also articulated a clear vision for Iran’s future, rejecting any return to past dictatorships. Slogans such as “A dictatorship is a dictatorship, whether with a turban or with a crown,” and “We want neither shah nor mullahs; we want freedom and a democratic republic,” underscore the popular demand for a system based on popular sovereignty, not the tyranny of a monarch or a mullah.
The context of brutality: A regime drowning in blood
The bravery of these Resistance Units is thrown into sharp relief by the staggering scale of the regime’s killing spree. According to a statement by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the regime executed at least 200 prisoners in September 2025 alone, marking the highest number of executions in a single month in 36 years. This figure is 2.5 times higher than September 2024 and a shocking seven times higher than September 2023.
The killing is accelerating. In the first nine months of 2025, the regime has sent at least 1,200 people to the gallows, already surpassing the 1,001 executions recorded for the entirety of 2024. This heinous campaign, as noted by the NCRI, is a clear sign of the clerical regime’s “terror of an impending eruption of public outrage.” It is not an act of strength, but the panicked lashing out of a regime that fears its own people.

The regime’s true target: Eliminating organized resistance
This wave of executions is not random; it is a calculated, all-out war on the organized opposition, particularly supporters of the PMOI. The case of Ehsan Faridi, a 22-year-old university student, is a stark example. Initially arrested for “propaganda against the system,” his charge was deliberately escalated to the capital offense of “corruption on earth”—a vague charge the regime uses to eliminate its opponents—specifically because of his support for the PMOI. His trial was a sham, built entirely on coerced confessions extracted under immense psychological pressure.
Ehsan Faridi is not an isolated case. He is one of 17 political prisoners affiliated with the PMOI who are under imminent threat of execution. The regime’s judiciary recently upheld the death sentence for another PMOI supporter, 30-year-old boxing champion Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani. In a telling sign of political interference, his sentence was confirmed despite having been overturned twice by the Supreme Court due to “numerous flaws.” This demonstrates a clear political directive from the highest levels of the security apparatus to eliminate the most dedicated voices of dissent.
An unbreakable will for a democratic republic
The regime’s campaign of terror is a desperate gambit to break the will of the Iranian people and sever their connection to the organized resistance. However, it is having the opposite effect. As NCRI President-elect Mrs. Maryam Rajavi stated, “The regime is trying to prevent uprisings with greater brutality — but young people’s resolve for regime change only grows stronger.”

The courageous activities of the Resistance Units in Zahedan and cities across Iran prove this to be true. In the face of the regime’s barbarism, they are doubling down on their mission, proving that they will not back down from their fight for the rights of their people. Their message echoes from the prison cells to the city streets: the Iranian people will not be silenced and will settle for nothing less than a free and democratic republic.
