Australia’s expulsion of Iranian ambassador vindicates decades of Resistance warnings on Tehran’s terror embassies

Australia has taken the unprecedented step of expelling the Iranian regime’s ambassador and announced plans to designate its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization—the first such ambassadorial expulsion since World War Two. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed on Tuesday that the decision was a direct response to credible intelligence linking Tehran to “extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil.”

The regime was found to have directed antisemitic arson attacks in 2024 against a Jewish restaurant in Sydney and a synagogue in Melbourne. According to Australian authorities, Tehran deliberately sought to “disguise its involvement” by using criminals and “members of organised crime gangs to do their bidding.” This was a calculated attempt to “undermine social cohesion and sow discord” within Australia, a tactic the Iranian regime has perfected over decades.

Australia’s discovery is the Iranian Resistance’s lived reality

While this revelation may be shocking to many in the international community, for the Iranian Resistance, it is a painful vindication of decades of warnings. For years, the Resistance has presented irrefutable evidence that the regime’s embassies are not diplomatic missions but epicenters of espionage and terrorism. The events in Australia are not an isolated incident but part of a deeply ingrained pattern of state-sponsored terror executed through diplomatic channels.

This pattern is undeniable. One needs only to look at the case of Assadollah Assadi, a Vienna-based diplomat-terrorist, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Belgium for his masterminding role in a plot to bomb the 2018 “Free Iran” gathering of the Iranian Resistance in Paris. He personally transported the bomb on a commercial flight from Tehran. Similarly, in March 2018, Albania expelled the regime’s ambassador and shuttered its embassy after thwarting a terrorist plot against PMOI members celebrating the Persian New Year.

An incomplete but necessary step forward

Australia’s decision to expel Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three other officials, close its embassy in Tehran, and designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization is a commendable and courageous step. It reflects a bipartisan consensus on the gravity of the threat, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong declaring the regime’s actions “completely unacceptable” and Opposition Leader Susan Ley decrying the “shocking foreign interference” and “brazen acts” designed to divide Australian society.

This decisive action must now serve as a model for the rest of the world. Other nations, including Britain and Sweden, have also warned that Tehran is using criminal proxies to carry out violent attacks on their soil. The time for indecision and appeasement is over. The threat is global, and the response must be unified and firm.

The only viable path to global security

The events in Australia have laid bare the true nature of the clerical regime. It is an international pariah that uses diplomatic cover to export terrorism and instability. The Iranian Resistance has consistently advocated for a clear and decisive policy to counter this menace. The only effective solution is the comprehensive isolation of the regime on the world stage.

This requires the terrorist designation of the IRGC by all nations, the complete closure of the regime’s embassies and so-called cultural centers, and the prosecution and expulsion of all its diplomats, intelligence agents, and mercenaries. These actions are not only essential for the security of Iranian refugees abroad but are a prerequisite for combating international terrorism.

Ultimately, the threat emanating from Tehran will only be permanently neutralized when the illegitimate regime is overthrown by the Iranian people and their organized Resistance. It is the moral and political duty of the international community to stand with the people of Iran and recognize their fundamental right to resist tyranny and establish a democratic republic.
