Iran: State-run media acknowledges regime’s fear of MEK Resistance Units

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, January 28, 2021—The state-run media mentioned the Iranian opposition as the source of problems and threat for mullahs’ theocratic rule. On January 27, the daily Mardom Salary acknowledged the role of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in revealing the regime’s secret nuclear weapon program and wrote:

“Those who blame the government and the Foreign Ministry have forgotten that it was the MEK who came with the nuclear issue and created a political uproar on the international level, which resulted in successive UN Security Council resolutions. They published reports about Arak and Natanz sites, and that caused problems. While some see the JCPOA’s inefficiency as the reason for [Donald] Trump’s withdrawal from the deal, they seem to have forgotten that he didn’t withdraw from the JCPOA for a year and a half, until the MEK launched its ‘Resistance Units’ strategy, which led to the 2017/2018 nationwide protests.”

This is not the first-time regime acknowledge to the role of MEK’s internal network, the Resistance Units.  Various regime officials, including supreme leader Ali Khamenei, have acknowledged the role of MEK Resistance Units in organizing and leading protests.

After the December 2017 nationwide protests, Khamenei stated on January 9, 2018: “The MEK are the third side of a triangle that created the uprising that they had prepared since months earlier.”

On May 17, 2020, Khamenei again expressed his concern about the growing influence of the MEK among the youth in his remarks at the meeting with members of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Basij.

On November 17, 2019, two days after the nationwide protests over the sudden increase in gasoline prices began, Khamenei referred to the MEK as a “wicked and criminal collective” who are “constantly encouraging and inviting people on social networks and elsewhere to conduct these evil acts.”

These acknowledgments are due to MEK’s growth and expansion of activities inside Iran in the past two years. The MEK Resistance Units have held daily anti-regime campaigns across the country while risking arrest and imprisonment.

In recent days, the MEK Resistance Units organized activities in Tehran, Isfahan, Rasht, Ahvaz, Ilam, and Kermanshah. For consecutive days, they have installed images, posters, and messages of the Iranian Resistance leader Massoud Rajavi and Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). They echoed the slogans, “The theocratic regime is fearing its downfall,” “The people and the Iranian resistance have pledged to overthrow the regime,” “Nothing in the world is stronger than our determination and will to achieve freedom,” and “Rise up to overthrow the regime of the Supreme Leader.”

The Resistance Units also took to graffiti, spreading slogans in support of the MEK reading, “Down with Khamenei, hail to Rajavi” and “The supreme leader’s end is near, hail to the MEK.” These activities aim to break the atmosphere of fear and repression imposed by the regime.

In tandem with the activities of the Resistance Units, rebellious youths across Iran have been targeting the regime’s suppressive centers in different cities. In the last two days, the rebellious and brave youths targeted three IRGC Basij bases in Tehran, Mashhad, and Kashan.

These acts reflect the public hatred toward the Basij, the much-hated paramilitary force of the regime. The main role of the Basij is to preserve the mullahs’ rule at any cost, through repressive measures against protests and demonstrations. The Basij played a prominent role in quelling the November 2019 protests, in which security forces killed over 1,500 protesters in the span of a few days.

In other parts of Tehran and Salmas images of regime’s officials including Khamenei and the regime’s death terror master Qassem Soleimani were torched. These actions show the people’s rejection of the regime in its entirety and their utter hatred for all the regime’s officials.
