Iran’s “No to Executions” campaign expands to 34 prisons

Prisoners across Iran held the 51st week of the “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign on January 14, 2025. The “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign is a coordinated protest movement initiated by political prisoners across Iran to oppose the regime’s extensive use of the death penalty. Since it began in early 2024, the campaign involves weekly hunger strikes and statements condemning executions, aiming to raise awareness and mobilize both national and international support against capital punishment in Iran. It has now expanded to 34 prisons across the country, with Talesh Prison, the women’s ward of Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, Borazjan Prison, and Joveyn Prison joining the campaign this week.

Participants in the campaign strongly condemned the confirmation of death sentences for four political prisoners in their statement.

They stated in the statement, “With the intensification of economic, cultural, and political crises, we witness widespread protests by various segments of society daily. It is evident to the despotic rulers of Iran that this public discontent will soon lead to another wave of mass uprisings, pushing this autocratic regime toward collapse. Thus, in a misguided calculation, the regime has resorted to increasing executions, intending to spread more fear and terror in society to prevent protests. Since last Tuesday alone, at least 17 people have been executed, and since the beginning of December, more than 102 people have been put to death.”

The statement by the prisoners participating in the campaign noted: “Every day, inmates sentenced to death for non-political crimes are hanged.”

The statement further added: “Political activists inside and outside the prisons, along with families seeking justice, have strongly condemned these inhumane sentences.”

Members of the “Tuesdays Against Executions” campaign emphasized that abolishing the death penalty is only possible through solidarity and collective action.

The inmates participating in the “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign are in the following prisons: Evin Prison (women’s ward, wards 4 and 8), Ghezel Hesar Prison (units 3 and 4), Karaj Central Prison, Greater Tehran Prison, Arak Prison, Khorramabad Prison, Asadabad Prison in Isfahan, Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan, Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, Nezam Prison in Shiraz, Bam Prison, Kahnuj Prison, Mashhad Prison, Qaemshahr Prison, Lakan Prison in Rasht Prison (men’s and women’s wards), Ardabil Prison, Tabriz Prison, Urmia Prison, Salmas Prison, Khoy Prison, Naqadeh Prison, Saqqez Prison, Baneh Prison, Marivan Prison, Kamyaran Prison, Tabas Prison, Khorin Prison in Varamin, Rudsar Prison in Gilan, Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz, Ramhormoz Prison, Talesh Prison, Adelabad Prison in Shiraz (women’s ward), Joveyn Prison, and Borazjan Prison.
