Iran: Protests increase as the economy nosedives under the regime’s destructive policies

While Iran’s regime is trying to take advantage of the ongoing war in Gaza to divert attention to the many problems inside Iran, protests against the regime’s destructive policies continue to increase. On Saturday and Sunday, people from various walks of life held strikes and protests in several cities across the country.

In Aghajari, southwest Iran, the official staff of the Ministry of Oil and Gas rallied on Saturday to protest the failure of their demands as in previous days. On Sunday, oil workers in Mahshahr and workers of the Offshore Oil Company in Siri Island, southern Iran, held similar rallies. In recent weeks, protests have been held by official oil ministry staff at operational centers, including at the Offshore Oil Company in Khark and Ahvaz.

The complete elimination of the salary ceiling and pension limit, the return of excess tax deductions, the full implementation of Article 10, and “refraining from encroachment” on the pension fund of oil workers are among the demands of the official oil workers.

Retired employees of the oil sector in Karaj also held protest rallies on Saturday to protest low pensions as the costs of living continue to soar. Under the regime’s own laws, the government is responsible for adjusting pensions based on the costs of living. But authorities continue to renege on their responsibilities, which leaves the pensioners of many sectors with no other option than to raise their demands in the streets.

Similar protests were held by retired oil sector employees in Tehran and Shahin Shahr on Saturday.

In Ahvaz, the workers of Iran National Steel Industrial Group held a protest rally as regime authorities continue to ignore their demands for better wages and work conditions. The workers protested and went on strike in response to the lack of implementation of the job classification plan and the payment of their salaries and on time.

According to local reports, the CEO of INSIG sabotaged the implementation of the job classification plan and refused to respond to the demands of the workers.

According to social media reports, security forces attacked the protest rally of workers of INSIG in Ahvaz, and the workers resisted the security forces.

The protesters continued their protest rallies for a second day on Sunday, shouting, “We want our rights!”

In Arak, healthcare staff rallied in front of the governorate, protesting the bad way the tariff law was enforced. The nurses are protesting mandatory overtime work and the egregious pay gap between nurses and doctors.

The nurses are demanding that the tariff laws of 2007 be implemented for nurses like other medical groups. While regime authorities claim to have implemented the law, the pay difference between nurses and doctors has not been addressed.

On Sunday, retirees and pensioners of the Social Security Organization held protest rallies in several cities, including Shush and Kermanshah. The protesters are demanding that the regime implements its own laws that require the government to adjust their pensions to be able to provide their basic needs.

In Kermanshah, the protesters were chanting, “Neither the government nor the Majlis care about the people!”
