U.S. initiates process to restore United Nations sanctions on Iran’s regime

Iran, August 21, 2020—The United States has informed the United Nations Security Council of its intention to restore all UN sanctions against the mullahs’ regime on Friday, according to The Wall Street Journal. Washington is taking these latest measures against Tehran in response to the mullahs’ non-compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

This process permits any signatory of the JCPOA between Iran and the five major powers, known as the P5+1, or the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia and China, to seek the return of all UN sanctions on the Tehran based on the Iranian regime’s violations of the JCPOA.

Despite the fact that the U.S. exited the JCPOA back in May 2018, Washington argues it enjoys the legal right to restore UN sanctions on Tehran. Members of the UN Security Council now have ten days to issue a resolution to neutralize the U.S. effort. If no member issues such a resolution within ten days, the UN Security Council Presidency, currently held by Indonesia, is obligated to issue a resolution on behalf of the UN Security Council to place the matter before other members for a vote.

If the resolution fails for any reason, UN Security Council sanctions will be imposed 30 days following the U.S. letter launching the “snapback” process. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the U.S. has the right to veto UN Security Council resolutions.

Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi, head of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), emphasized in a June 20th speech that the six UN Security Council resolutions should have been restored long ago.

“The Iranian Resistance has also emphasized since a long time ago that it seeks the restoration of the six UN Security Council resolutions against the regime,” Madam Rajavi said.

Despite the deadly coronavirus pandemic that has killed over 91,700 people in Iran, the mullahs’ priorities remain using the Iranian people’s wealth to seek nuclear weapons, advance their ballistic missile program, further fuel terrorism across the Middle East, and impose severe domestic crackdown on the Iranian people. As a result, over two-thirds of Iran’s population are living under the poverty line.

There are no obstacles or prohibitions for the purchase and import of medicines and medical equipment for the clerical regime, but rather than the lives of the people of Iran, they are only concerned about their own pockets suffering from sanctions, Mrs. Rajavi said in a speech back on March 31.

With more people suffering from Covid-19 across the country, Iranian Resistance leader Massoud Rajavi called for the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) to be disbanded and its funding used to provide care for the Iranian people.

“If the ruling theocracy does not seek to engage in suppression, warmongering, and terrorism, one military would suffice. It should not burden the suffering and deprived people of Iran with the auxiliary costs of the IRGC,” Mr. Rajavi added.

Alireza Jafarzadeh, Deputy Director of the NCRI-U.S. Rep Office, welcomed the recent developments. “Reimposing the prior [Security Council] sanctions on the ruling mullahs in Iran, helps the Iranian people in their quest to liberate their country because sanctions would weaken the Supreme Leader and the [Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps] who are responsible for suppressing dissent and killing freedom-seeking protesters,” Mr. Jafarzadeh said to Fox News.

“… under no circumstances should this outlaw regime have unrestricted access to purchase or sell weapons," Mr. Jafarzadeh said in an interview with The Washington Examiner.
