Jan. 25, 2019 – On Thursday, protests over government corruption and economic woes resumed in various cities of Iran. These protests have become a common sight in Iran as the ruling regime finds itself increasingly incapable of responding to the demands of a growingly restive population.
Marivan: Unpaid municipal workers hold demonstrations
In Marivan, Kurdistan province, a group of municipal workers gathered in front of the municipality building and held demonstrations for the fourth consecutive day. The workers are demanding their salaries, which they haven’t received for over nine months.
In the past year, these workers have staged protests on several occasions. In the past week, the workers have been laying out empty table cloths in front of the mayor’s office, an act of protest that symbolizes the hardships they’re going through and the fact that they can’t feed their families.
According to state-run Tasnim News Agency, some of the workers have not received their pay for more than 21 months. Local officials have yet to respond to the demands of the workers.

Also in Abadan, a group of street vendors held demonstrations in Khomeini Street and demanded that they be given permission to return to their previous work locations.
The municipality has been preventing these merchants from selling their wares under the pretext of reorganizing the street. In Thursday’s demonstrations, the children of the vendors were accompanying them. These hardworking merchants held banners that read:
- If you’re not giving us jobs, don’t take away our jobs
- Inflation, high prices, our lives in crisis
- Fellow citizens be aware, we’re merchants not thugs
