Iran’s coronavirus death toll surpasses 100,000

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, September 7, 2020—Over 100,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 427 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Monday afternoon local time, September 7. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 22,410, around a fifth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 24,345 in Tehran, 7164 in Razavi Khorasan, 4854 in Mazandaran, 4574 in Isfahan, 4402 in Lorestan, 1307 in Semnan, 1249 in Yazd, 874 in Qazvin, and 852 in Ilam. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Despite the catastrophic Covid-19 death toll, regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani are sending children back to school and paving the path of yet another devastating calamity for the Iranian people. Even the regime’s own Ministry of Education has denied any responsibility in this regard and says they are following orders from the National Covid-19 Task Force chaired by Rouhani.

“Explanations provided by the Education Minister’s deputies indicate the reopening of schools was based on a decision made in the National Covid-19 Task Force and the Education Ministry implemented the plan. From this day forward we must execute any decision made by the National Covid-19 Task Force,” said Zahra Sheikhi, spokeswoman of the Majlis (parliament) Health Commission on Sunday, according to Are Iran daily.

“Research carried out across the globe indicates that Covid-19 has returned in nearly every country that has reopened schools,” said Deputy Health Minister Reza Malakzadeh on Monday. “This concern exists for all of us that the country may face a third wave in the fall season. In addition to the high number of casualties, this will have a devastating impact on our medical staff throughout the country,” he added, according to the Setareyeh Sobh daily.

The state-run Resalat newspaper wrote on Sunday: “We shut down the universities for several years during the cultural revolution. In the current situation, where we are faced with a very critical situation due to the disease, schools must be shut down. It might not be proper to say this, but the physical reopening of schools is a genocide—especially among the poor segments of the society—given the warnings of a tough autumn being ahead of us.”

The semi-official ISNA news agency quoted Ali Maher, the deputy of the Coronavirus Task Force in Tehran, as saying, “We must quickly find solutions to compensate for the fatigue of the medical staff and a mechanism to replace the current healthcare workforce with fresh substitutes. The wear and fatigue of the medical staff that results from seven months of nonstop service is very disturbing and we must quickly find a solution.”

Javan, a newspaper tied to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), quoted the dean o Eastern Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University as saying, “Until September 6, we identified 30,000 coronavirus cases in Eastern Azerbaijan, with a 4.5 casualty rate. In the past 24 hours, the number of hospitalized cases in the province has doubled. We have 780 patients hospitalized in our treatment centers, 110 of which are under ventilator support, which is 50 more than the previous day.”

The deputy dean of Gilan Medical Sciences University said, “Every day, we hospitalize more people than we release in Gilan. The duration of hospitalization has increased from 12 to 18 days and patients are in more critical conditions.” (Source: Tasnim, September 7)

The spokesperson for Hormozgan Medical Sciences University said, “We predict a growing trend in the number of coronavirus cases and hospitalized patients in the coming weeks. Currently, there are 52 coronavirus patients in ICU sections of the province’s hospitals. In the past 24 hours, eight patients have lost their lives and the number of coronavirus deaths in Hormozgan has reached 719.” (Source: IRNA, September 7)
