June 12, 2019 – At a news conference in Vienna, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano slapped new accusations against the regime of Iran saying Tehran is increasing its production of enriched uranium.
The Iranian regime-affiliated newspaper Etemad, close to the camp of the mullahs’ President Hassan Rouhani, asked why has Iran been sanctioned based on untrue reports.
“We didn’t impose sanctions. The UN imposes those sanctions,” Amano explained.
“We identified areas of concern to us regarding Iran’s nuclear program and asked the authorities to clarify those for us. But unfortunately, our expectations were dashed and we didn’t get any response from the Iranian side for years. I identified 12 issues in 2011 and said the Iranians need to answer those issues, so we can have them clarified… You might ask why those issues have not been solved. The reason is there was no cooperation from the Iranian side,” Mr. Amano replied.
The Iranian regime announced last month that it would suspend some commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal in retaliation for sanctions reinstated by the U.S.
Mr. Amano also said he was worried about the current tensions over the Iranian nuclear issue and called for dialogue.
Iranian regime Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif later said reducing tensions was only possible by stopping what he called the "economic war by America".
"Those who wage such wars cannot expect to remain safe," he told a news conference during a visit to Tehran by his German counterpart Heiko Maas.
Mr. Maas warned that the situation in the region was "highly explosive and extremely serious," and could lead to a military escalation between the U.S. and Iran.
