Iran Freedom: The grand rally of the Iranian opposition in Washington

Analysis by PMOI/MEK

Iran, June 25, 2019 – While the media is filled with controversial news about the explosive state of the Middle East and growing tensions between the Iranian regime and the international community, Iranian dissidents and supporters of the Iranian resistance have been holding a series of rallies in different countries to show the world the solution to the problems of Iran and the Middle East.

The participants in these events have one clear message: To restore peace and security in Iran and across the Middle East, the international community must recognize the Iranian resistance and the democratic demands of the uprising of the Iranian people.

In continuation of the rallies and marches of the Iranian resistance, a large crowd of Iranian-Americans gathered in Washington, D.C., on Friday. The event had a strong impact especially as the Iranian regime is escalating its terrorist and destabilizing measures in the Middle East. In recent weeks alone, the regime and its proxies have engaged in attacking oil ships in the Persian Gulf, industrial complexes in Saudi Arabia, and downing a U.S. drone.

The rally also took place against the backdrop of increasing protest movements in Iran and on the heels of a protest two days earlier in Tehran, in which demonstrators were shouting at regime officials, “Let go of your warmongering, think about us!” and “Our enemy is right here, they’re lying that it’s the U.S.”

The Washington rally was the extension of voices and activities of Iranian Resistance Units, who have been challenging the mullahs and their repressive forces in the past year, setting fire to banners of regime icons and writing slogans in support of democratic regime change in Iran.

The demands of the Washington rally

The demonstrators in Washington, D.C., who were accompanied by distinguished American politicians, had the following demands:

  • Solidarity with the uprisings of the Iranian people
  • Recognition and support for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the democratic alternative to the tyrannical rule of the mullahs
  • Support for the ten point plan of Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi

The demonstrators, who began their rally in front of the State Department and later marched toward the White House, denounced the repressive and warmongering policies of the Iranian regime and its allies.

The speakers of the event also spoke about the regime’s human rights violations.

The remarkable presence of American politicians at the rally

Several distinguished American politicians spoke at the Washington rally of the Iranian opposition, including Senator Robert Torricelli, Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, retired military General Jack Keane, Congressman Brad Sherman, and Congressman Tom McClintock.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi also sent a televised message to the rally, in which she called for tougher measures and a firm policy toward the Iranian regime and support for the aspirations of the Iranian people to live in freedom and democracy.

On the sidelines of the Washington rally

The Washington, D.C., rally was the second major event of the Iranian resistance in the past week. Earlier this month, on June 15, Iranians held an equally large gathering in Brussels, in front of the headquarters of the European Union, where they condemned the policy of appeasement toward the mullahs and voiced their support for the aspirations of the Iranian people for democratic regime change in their country.

Presently, after four decades of brutal tyranny, the Iranian regime is drawing its last breaths. The mullahs are futilely clinging on to power through sheer repression and terrorist meddling in neighboring countries. However, control is slowly slipping through their grasp as protests continue to rage throughout the country and the Iranian resistance is gaining momentum inside Iran and across the globe.

The people of Iran and their resistance are writing a new chapter in the history of their homeland.
