Iran, July 1, 2020—Over 63,700 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 341 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Wednesday afternoon local time, July 1. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 10,958, around a sixth of the actual figure.

The death toll in various provinces include: 4,870 in Khuzestan, 3,900 in Razavi Khorasan, 3,205 in Isfahan, 2,055 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 1,610 in Golestan, 1,590 in Kermanshah, 1,340 in Fars, 805 in Kerman, 695 North Khorasan, and 620 in Bushehr. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Spokesperson for the regime’s Health Ministry said on Wednesday noon local time that 141 people have died of the novel coronavirus in the past 24-hour period. “Tehran province has reported a significant increase in the number of patients hospitalized,” she said, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi announced COVID-19 restrictions in the provinces of Khuzestan, Sistan & Baluchistan, Hormozgan, Bushehr, Fars, East and West Azerbaijans, Razavi Khorasan, Kerman, Tehran and Alborz. “Khuzestan has one-third of the country’s hospitalized patients and deaths,” Harirchi said on Wednesday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet affiliated to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence & Security (MOIS).

“The number of patients hospitalized are more than the number of patients released… A shortage in beds is unfortunately leaving us unable to hospitalize a number of the needy. In our opinion Tehran is in code red conditions,” said the head of the infectious diseases branch in Tehran’s Masih Daneshvari Hospital on Tuesday, according to the state-run Hamshahri daily.

“We are facing extreme fatigue among the medical personnel. A continuation of this trend will most definitely weaken the medical staff’s ability to manage the illness… and will lead to a very significant number of deaths among coronavirus patients across the country… Our capacities are limited and soon we will be seeing all our ICU beds occupied,” said the Tehran COVID-19 Task Force deputy on Tuesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

In Razavi Khorasan province hospitals are reporting that on Saturday, Sunday and Monday there were 1,900 new cases and 220 deaths in the city of Mashhad; 1,100 new cases and 97 deaths in the city of Neyshabur; 1,200 new cases and 143 deaths in the city of Sabzevar; 450 new cases and 39 deaths in the city of Ghouchan.

In North Khorasan province, from Saturday to Tuesday the cities of Bojnourd and Shirvan alone are reporting a total of 2,700 new cases along with at least 190 deaths. These are very high numbers per capita in this province.

In Southern Khorasan province, the head of the infectious diseases group of Birjand Medical Sciences University confirmed that the number of cases in the province has seen a tenfold increase and all hospital beds are filled, Hamshahri reported on Tuesday. “Previously, the number of hospitalized coronavirus patients was four or five per day. But now, we’re hospitalizing 45-50 people every day,” the dean said. “We’re forecasting that the number of deaths from this virus will grow to 90,000 by September.”

“Eleven counties in Western Azerbaijan including Urmia, Khoy, Mahabad, Bukan, Miandoab, Sardast, Salmas, Oshnaviyeh, Takab, Piranshahr, and Naghadeh are in cod-red conditions,” the provincial governor of Western Azerbaijan said, the official IRNA news agency reported on Wednesday. Meanwhile, ISNA news agency quoted the dean of the medical sciences university of the province as saying, “If the number of cases continues to increase, we’ll have to set up makeshift hospitals in the province.”

In Ardebil province, IRNA reported on Wednesday: “The increase in the number of coronavirus cases has caused two hospitalization centers to be reopened to admit new patients.” IRNA quoted the dean of the province’s medical sciences university as saying, “The number of hospitalized patients in the coronavirus sections of the province, which was previously under 100, has now reached 143. The coronavirus outbreak will continue for two more years.”

In Khuzestan province, Khaneyeh Melat website quoted an MP from Shadegan as saying, “Government officials refrained from taking a firm, unified, and comprehensive approach to contain the virus from the onset… they didn’t make a decision that will result in the desired outcome… Now it’s too late, we’ve already lost many citizens to the coronavirus and the country has incurred huge costs.” The MP demanded that the province be declared in critical condition and tighter restrictions imposed.

The caretaker of Khuzestan’s health center said, “The large volume of incoming patients is endangering the capacity of our treatment system. If this situation continues, the exhaustion of our medical staff… will negatively impact the treatment of patients, and the shortage of hospital beds and ICU beds will increase the risks of death.” (Source: Khuzestan News TV Channel, June 30)

In Zanjan province, Rooz-e No website quoted the dean of Zanjan Medical Sciences University as saying, “More than 500 patients have been hospitalized in the past two days, which shows a threefold increase in comparison to previous days. Today, the increase might reach fourfold… All hospital beds in the province are filled and more than half of them are occupied by coronavirus patients… The province’s treatment system is faced with a shortage of human resources.”
