Iran, June 16, 2020—Over 52,400 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 332 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Tuesday afternoon local time, June 16. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 9,065, around a sixth of the actual figure.
The death toll in various provinces include: 10,800 in Tehran, 4,280 in Khuzestan, 1,810 in Lorestan, 1,470 in West Azerbaijan, 1,360 in Kermanshah, 1,115 in Kurdistan, and 670 in Kerman. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.
The regime’s Health Ministry spokesperson on Tuesday announced 2,563 new COVID-19 cases and 119 new deaths during the last 24 hours, and 2,815 chronic patients. “The provinces of Khuzestan, East and West Azerbaijans, Razavi Khorasan, Lorestan, Kermanshah, Golestan, Hormozgan, Kurdistan, and Sistan & Baluchistan are in code red conditions,” she added, according to the state-run ISNA news agency.

Iranian regime Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi said on Monday that Iran suffered 66 deaths per day during the 1980s Iran-Iraq war while there have been 107 and 113 coronavirus deaths in the past two days. “There are no provinces where we are not concerned about the COVID-19 trend. The only green city we have is Abu Mousa. During the past few days we have once again witnessed daily deaths in triple digits. These are considered high numbers for COVID-19 fatalities. Government agencies may decide to reimpose quarantine measures and it is then that many innocent people will be suffering from economic setbacks due to such restrictions,” Harirchi said on Tuesday, according to the ISNA news agency.
“There needs to be an urgent and serious decision for a return of quarantine restrictions,” said Ali Akbar Haghdoust, another Deputy Health Minister, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency. “The novel coronavirus epidemic is on the rise… The Health Ministry has officially requested additional controlled restrictions be imposed especially in areas where the COVID-19 spread is more expansive… The coronavirus spread across the country is not normal at all.”

“Each day and each week we are witnessing the epidemic reach new heights in various provinces,” said Hamid Souri, a member of the National COVID-19 Task Force, on Tuesday, according to the IRNA news agency. “As an epidemiologist I must say that if the status quo continues we will not be able to decrease the coronavirus epidemic impact to a minimum… Each week we are witnessing the epidemic reach a new height somewhere and naturally, a heavy price must be paid considering the time needed to decrease to a necessary safety limit for the population… Some of the measures we took were not fast enough to obtain better results,” he added.
“There is a wave of concern across our cities regarding a return of a second wave. The most important sign is the death of 15 individuals in one day,” said Ali Mostafavi, deputy governor of West Azerbaijan province in northwest Iran, on Tuesday, according to the state-run Hamshahri daily.
“One third of the daily COVID-19 stats are in Khuzestan province… Currently, Khuzestan’s ICU capacity has reached its limit. Other branches cannot cope with the number of patients and medical personal are exhausted,” said the speaker of Khuzestan’s provincial parliament on Monday, according to the state-run Entekhab daily.

According to IRNA, the governor of Kermanshah province described the situation in the province as difficult and worrying, saying, “The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients in Kermanshah has surpassed 400 and we are in a difficult and worrying situation… We’ve proposed shutting down government offices for 10 days. The spread of coronavirus in some regions of the province, including Uramanat, is red. To prevent further spread of the virus commutes to the Uramanat region will be banned from Tuesday to Saturday.”
The dean of Kermanshah Medical Sciences University said, “Given that 100 percent of hospital beds allocated to coronavirus patients in Farabi and Golestan hospitals are occupied, we’ve prepared 40 beds in Imam Hossein hospital and 12 ICU beds in Taleghani hospital for coronavirus patients… Parts of the Shohada hospital and hospital no. 520 of the army and state security forces are being prepared to admit coronavirus patients… On average, we’re receiving 80-90 hospitalized coronavirus patients every day. IRNA quoted the dean of Kurdistan Medical Sciences University as saying, “While the number of coronavirus patients in Sanandaj was 287 on Sunday, by Monday noon, the number reached 315 and by night it reached 336… Coronavirus is spreading across Sanandaj with a steep incline… Even if all the facilities of the country are put at our disposal, we can’t fight this virus.”
The caretaker of Baneh governorate said, “Next week, there will be an intense coronavirus peak in Baneh… Every 24 hours the number of hospitalized patients is growing at a factor of 1.5 and the number of positive cases is multiplying. If the trend continues, the number of hospitalized patients will surpass the capacity of the city’s hospitals. The crisis is triple the size of the February outbreak and includes people from younger ages.” (Source: Asr-e Iran, June 15)
“When there were one or two cases in the province, the stats were declared, but now that the numbers have reached several hundred cases, the figures are not announced… the people should know how many hundreds of new coronavirus cases emerge in the province every day,” said the deputy governor of Bushehr, IRNA reported.
ISNA quoted the deputy governor of Hamedan as saying, “The counties of Famenin, Kabudarahang, and Nahavand are in code red situation… other counties are in yellow situation… we’re witnessing an increase in the number of positive coronavirus cases in the province.”
In Lorestan, the president of the health and treatment network of Borujerd said, “The virus is advancing at an intense pace and we must only counter it. We must shift from sanitation toward treatment. Sanitation is achieved through quarantine, which we don’t have in this country.” (Source: ISNA, June 15)
