Iran, June 17, 2020—Officials in various provinces across Iran are voicing concerns over the rising number of COVID-19 cases.
“New COVID-19 cases in Razavi Khorasan province are once again on the rise,” said an official involved in the effort to bring this virus under control, according to a program aired Tuesday, June 16, on provincial state TV. “Currently, in addition to Mashhad, the cities of Taybad, Torbat-e Jam, Bajestan and Gonabad are considered code red areas.”
“Regarding the city of Taybad considering the fact that we have a large number of people hospitalized, in the past few days we have dispatched ambulance buses and a number of the patients from the city of Taybad have been transferred to Mashhad. This will decrease the burden on the Taybad medical staff,” the official added.
On Tuesday, a local sent two videos describing the code red situation in cities across Razavi Khorasan province. “Currently, hospitals in the cities of Taybad, Torbat-e Jam and Bakhraz have reached their full capacity and the cities are in code red status,” the report reads.
A second COVID-19 wave has engulfed the central prison of Zahedan in southeast Iran and to this day dozens of inmates in wards 2, 7 and 8 have contracted the illness, according to a report posted on a website of human rights activists.
Seventeen inmates held in one cell of ward 7 have all now contracted COVID-19. The names of a number of these prisoners in ward 7 who have contracted the virus are Mahmoud Rigi and Adris Rigi. Another inmate, Shakour Kikhah, from ward 8 of Zahedan Central Prison has also contracted the virus.
Furthermore, political prisoner Yahiya Gomshadzehi, a member of the Baluch ethnic minority, has also contracted the novel coronavirus.
Over 52,400 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 332 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Tuesday afternoon local time, June 16. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 9,065, around a sixth of the actual figure.
The death toll in various provinces include: 10,800 in Tehran, 4,280 in Khuzestan, 1,810 in Lorestan, 1,470 in West Azerbaijan, 1,360 in Kermanshah, 1,115 in Kurdistan, and 670 in Kerman. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.
