Iran coronavirus update: Over 497,600 deaths, officials increasingly concerned over omicron

Over 497,600 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Friday afternoon local time, January 14. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 132,026, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 116,235 in Tehran, 34,495 in Isfahan, 30,035 in Khuzestan, 18,830 in Fars, 18,773 in West Azerbaijan, 17,255 in Gilan, 16,455 in Lorestan, 13,380 in Qom, 9073 in Markazi (Central), 5854 in Qazvin, and 3774 in Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Friday as 26 deaths and 2539 new cases. Furthermore, 1409 patients are in ICUs and 285 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

While senior regime officials are receiving foreign vaccines, and regime MPs are receiving Astra Zeneca vaccines according to the Javan daily affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), the Health Ministry says there is no need for more vaccine imports.

“There is no longer any need to import coronavirus vaccines and we have enough domestic vaccines in stock,” said one deputy health minister on Friday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). “700 to 800 people have been identified to have contracted omicron and our concern is the fast pace of this variant’s spread,” he added.

“Most certainly the number of people who have contracted omicron is higher than the number of people who have officially been announced as testing positive. This virus can 100 percent become the main variant in the country,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“[Omicron], as expected, is increasing and it appears one third or one fourth of the cases are due to this variant,” said another member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The number of omicron cases has increased. Fifty-five percent of the individuals who tested positive have contracted the omicron variant,” said the dean of Arak Medical Sciences University on Friday regarding Markazi province. “The percentage of positive tests in the cities of Saveh and Zarandiyeh in the past few days has increased in alarming fashion,” said the caretaker dean of Saveh Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“During the past 24 hours, 40 percent of the coronavirus tests have been positive. According to the Qom Medical Sciences University, 103 of the 279 tests had positive results,” according to a Friday report wired by the regime’s official IRIB news agency.
“With 85 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the past 24 hours, we currently have 389 patients hospitalized, of which 84 are in ICUs,” according to a Friday report released by the Shiraz Medical Sciences University regarding Fars province.
