Iran coronavirus update: Over 261,400 deaths, daily fatalities break three-month record

Iran, April 22, 2021—Over 261,400 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 539 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Thursday afternoon local time, April 22. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 68,366, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 59,801 in Tehran, 17,060 in Isfahan, 16,590 in Razavi Khorasan, 15,804 in Khuzestan, 11,025 in Mazandaran, 10,998 in Lorestan, 10,718 in East Azerbaijan, 9818 in West Azerbaijan, 9151 in Gilan, 9055 in Qom, 7857 in Fars, 6668 in Alborz, 6655 in Golestan, 5946 in Sistan and Baluchestan, 5883 in Hamadan, 5874 in Kerman, 5433 in Markazi, 4620 in Semnan, 4557 in Kurdistan, 3257 in Ardabil, 3010 in Hormozgan, 2994 in Qazvin, 2870 in Zanjan, 2696 in Ilam, 2674 in Bushehr. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Sima Sadat Lari, the spokesperson of the health ministry, declared today that in the past 24 hours, 453 people have died of Covid-19, which is the highest record in the past 146 days. There are also 5,039 critical patients, a record number in the past 111 days. “301 cities are red zones, 95 cities are orange, 45 cities are yellow, and seven cities are blue zones,” Sadat Lari added, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Despite the growing spread of cases and deaths caused by the regime’s destructive and criminal policies, only 0.6 percent of the population have been vaccinated. The public relations center of the health ministry declared on Thursday, “Until yesterday, 497,418 people have received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine, and 143,784 have received the second dose.”

On Thursday, the state-run Aftab-e Yazd ran a piece titled, “Deliberate delay in the import and application of vaccine is increasing the number of deaths by the hour.” Aftab-e Yazd warned, “Don’t allow the outrage of the society to go from a simmering boil to an uncontrollable steep slope. The impeachment of this or that person won’t solve any problem and will only increase the pain.”

In Isfahan province, the number of cases is increasing, and according to the spokesperson of the province’s medical sciences university, there are 2,502 hospitalized covid-19 patients, of whom 384 are in ICU, and in the past 24 hours, 38 patients lost their lives in the province’s medical centers. According to the president of the health network of Shareza, the city has become an ultra-red zone, which has forced officials to double the number of medical staff. Even the rooms allocated to nurses and doctors have been turned into patient rooms, according to a report by Mehr News Agency on April 22.

In Fars province, the public relations of Shiraz Medical Sciences University reported that the number of hospitalized coronavirus patients has reached 2,539, of which 336 are in ICU. In the past 24 hours, 28 people have lost their lives to covid, according to the university’s website on Thursday.

In Alborz province, the dean of the province’s medical sciences university said on Thursday, “In the past 24 hours, 34 Covid-19 victims died and the total number of covid deaths in the province reached 3,296.” (Source: ISNA news agency)

In Khuzestan province, the deputy dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University reported that all hospitals in the city have been filled and said, “The number of patients in Masjed Soleiman, Izeh, Shush, and Andimeshk is very high. We have been forced to cancel all furloughs for our medical staff and we’re using our full capacity, which is taking its toll on the staff. There are currently more than 1,500 Covid-19 patients in the normal sections of hospitals and more than 400 people in ICU sections.” (Source: ISNA)

 

 

In East Azarbaijan province, the dean of Tabriz Medical Sciences University said on Thursday, “There are 1,606 hospitalized Covid-19 patients, which is an eight-percent increase in comparison to the third peak in November. In the past 24 hours, 306 Covid-19 patients were hospitalized, which is the highest number in the current year. Twenty-three people lost their lives in the past day, and 304 people are in ICU sections on ventilator support.” (Source: Mehr News Agency)

In Lorestan province, the secretary of the Covid-19 Task Force confirmed 1,095 new cases and 13 deaths in the past 24 hours and declared that all cities in Lorestan are red zones and there are 1,302 hospitalized patients, according to Mehr News Agency.

In Razavi Khorasan province, the provincial governor said on Thursday, “The number of cases, hospitalized patients, and Covid-19 deaths has been increasing in the past few days has. In the past day, we had 368 new cases and 26 deaths in the province, which is worrying.” (Source: ISNA)

In Hamedan province, the spokesperson of the province’s medical sciences university confirmed 21 Covid-19 deaths on Thursday and added that in the previous day, 265 have been hospitalized in the normal section and 25 patients are in ICU, according to Mehr News Agency.

In Ardebil, the dean of the medical sciences university said, “In the past 24 hours, 110 new patients were hospitalized and there were nine deaths.” (Source: ISNA)
