Iran coronavirus update: Over 498,500 deaths, over 10,000 omicron cases estimated

Over 498,500 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Tuesday afternoon local time, January 18. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 132,113, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 116,435 in Tehran, 40,155 in Razavi Khorasan, 30,090 in Khuzestan, 18,875 in Fars, 18,085 in Mazandaran, 9238 in Hamedan, 8268 in Yazd, 8255 in Hormozgan, 6575 in Semnan, 5559 in Bushehr, and 4421 in South Khorasan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Tuesday as 18 deaths and 3653 new cases. Furthermore, 1295 patients are in ICUs and 306 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“As we speak, we are facing threats from both the omicron and delta variants. The number of people seeking initial medical care at Tehran’s Masih Daneshvari Hospital, being one of our main facilities, has increased by ten percent in comparison to two to three weeks ago,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Monday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The number of people across the country who have received their third vaccine dose is low. We are entering the omicron peak,” said a senior Health Ministry official on Tuesday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“More than 80 percent of the cases are due to omicron”

“The number of positive tests has increased by 70 percent in comparison to last week. The number of people seeking initial treatment at our medical centers has escalated significantly. More than 80 percent of the cases are due to omicron,” said the spokesperson of Hormozgan Medical Sciences University on Tuesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

There are more than 200 people hospitalized in Yazd province, said the spokesperson of the local Medical Sciences University on Tuesday. “During the past 24 hours 72 coronavirus patients have been hospitalized and 214 patients in total are hospitalized, of which 55 are in ICUs,” this official added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“With 87 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the past 24 hours, we currently have 321 people hospitalized, of which 54 are in ICUs,” according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Shiraz Medical Sciences University regarding Fars province.

“Coronavirus conditions are so concerning that the number of people seeking initial medical care on a daily basis has increased by 30 percent, of which 40 percent are testing positive. To this day at least 23 people who contracted omicron have lost their lives and the number of cases across the country is estimated at above 10,000,” according to a piece published on Tuesday in the state-run Hamdeli newspaper.
