Iran coronavirus update: Over 496,100 deaths, number of omicron cases can skyrocket

Over 496,100 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Saturday afternoon local time, January 8. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,847, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 115,930 in Tehran, 34,380 in Isfahan, 29,955 in Khuzestan, 18,750 in Fars, 17,148 in East Azerbaijan, 16,415 in Lorestan, 9284 in Kermanshah, 9033 in Markazi (Central), 8208 in Yazd, 6348 in Lorestan, 5524 in Bushehr, and 3759 in Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Saturday as 26 deaths and 701 new cases. Furthermore, 1889 patients are in ICUs and 168 of the new cases have been hospitalized. “The total number of omicron cases across the country stands at 467. Four in East Azerbaijan, one in West Azerbaijan, 38 in Isfahan, four in Alborz, nine in Bushehr, 85 in Tehran, one in Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari, 78 in Razavi Khorasan, eight in Zanjan, ten in Sistan & Baluchistan, 11 in Fars, 11 in Qom, one in Kurdistan, three in Kerman, 12 in Kermanshah, two in Golestan, 36 in Mazandaran, nine in Markazi, 122 in Hormozgan, two in Hamedan, 17 in Yazd, three in Lorestan,” according to a statement released on Saturday by the regime’s Health Ministry.

“The city of Jajeram is registered as an orange zone and as the only high-risk city across the country. The cities of Shirvan, Faruj, and Garmeh that were previously registered as blue cities are now considered yellow coronavirus zones,” according to a report wired by IRNA about North Khorasan on Saturday.

“The clandestine spread of omicron is concerning. To this day we have confirmed 11 cases and due to the high pace of this variant’s spread the entire society is threatened,” said the caretaker dean of Shiraz Medical Sciences University in Fars province on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The status quo is concerning. A bad scenario is before us and may result in difficult circumstances soon. It has been two weeks that the number of new cases in the cities of Ashtian, Taghresh, Kamijan, and Mahallat have been high. In the city of Saveh, with a population of 200,000, the number of new cases is doubled and the number of those hospitalized four times higher than the average in the provincial capital of Arak,” said the governor of Markazi province on Saturday, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

“To this day 11 people have tested positive for omicron. We should not consider the number of people hospitalized and the death toll of this variant to below. The number of omicron cases can suddenly skyrocket,” said the deputy dean of Qom Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“Omicron has reached the cities of Bafgh and Taft. To this day 17 positive cases have been confirmed by the Health Ministry,” according to the deputy dean of Yazd Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the Mehr news agency.

“The death toll and those being hospitalized in Khuzestan is a bit higher than other province. Furthermore, last week we witnessed a 14.4 percent increase in the number of new cases in comparison to the week prior to that,” said the caretaker dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
