Growing support for a firm policy toward Tehran among U.S. lawmakers

Iran, March 5, 2021—On March 3, 45 members of the U.S. House of Representatives added their signature to H.Res. 118, a resolution that calls for a firm policy toward the Iranian regime’s malignant behavior. This brings the total number of signatories of the resolution to 158.

H.Res. 118, registered by Congressman Tom McClintock (R-CA), is titled, “Expressing support for the Iranian people's desire for a democratic, secular, and nonnuclear Republic of Iran and condemning violations of human rights and state-sponsored terrorism by the Iranian Government.”

It is a bipartisan document that highlights the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses, terrorist activities, and the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom.

Twenty days after its introduction, the co-sponsors of the resolution have grown by nearly 40 percent. The new cosponsors of the resolution were declared as members of both Democrat and Republican parties attended a virtual conference on Iran policy. Participants included members from several House committees, including the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Committee on Armed Services, the Subcommittee on National Security, the Committee on the Judiciary, the House Intelligence Committee, and the House Budget Committee.

The participants in the conference condemned the Iranian regime’s crimes against the Iranian people, especially the Baluch minority in recent days, and called for firm action by the U.S. administration in the following areas:

  • Holding the regime to account for its terrorist activities
  • Support for the uprising of the Iranian people and the ten-point plan of Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)
  • Support for the Iranian people’s desire to live in a democratic, non-nuclear, and secular republic
  • The persistence of a firm policy against the mullahs’ regime and avoiding to give concessions to the regime

Growing support for a firm policy against the Iranian regime is happening as Tehran has been banking on the revival of the appeasement policy. In their remarks at the conference, the members of the U.S. Congress highlighted three key topics:

Terrorism: Iran’s regime is still the number one state-sponsor of terrorism, the representatives stressed, and this will not change as long as the mullahs are in power. This reality has highlighted itself pronouncedly in recent months as a career Iranian diplomat was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a court in Belgium for his role in a bombing plot against a rally of the Iranian Resistance. The co-sponsors of the bill also stipulated that the Iranian regime continues to pursue terrorist goals in European countries and elsewhere.

Human rights violations: With its terrorist and nuclear activities, the regime is trying to divert attention from what is going on inside Iran. But during Wednesday’s conference, the U.S. lawmakers all pointed to the regime’s human rights abuses and the repression and killing of the people. The members of conference condemned the brutal massacre of Iranian political prisoners in 1988 and the recent crackdown on the impoverished people of Baluchestan and elsewhere in Iran.

The future of Iran: The lawmakers reiterated their support for the aspirations of the Iranian people to establish freedom in their country. The speakers were especially supportive of Madam Rajavi’s ten-point plan for the future of Iran, which Mr. McClintock described as “Jeffersonian.”

H.Res 118, which is now enjoying growing support among lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, is a nail in the coffin of the Iranian regime’s ridiculous maneuvers to put up a show of moderation and create a false impression of moderation with figures such as its president Hassan Rouhani and its foreign minister Javad Zarif.

While world powers decide how to proceed on the Iranian regime’s nuclear program, Tehran has been trying hard to prevent other issues such as terrorism and human rights violations from brought into the fold. But H.Res. 118 and its signatories show that there is increasing support for the idea that the right policy toward Iran is one that takes into account the broad range of malign activities that the regime is engaged in.
