Further protests by workers, environmentalist and retirees across Iran

Iran, September 11, 2020—On Thursday, September 10, expelled workers of the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company continued their strike and protest rally in front of the governorate in the city of Shush in Khuzestan province, southwest Iran. The strike has continued for 88 consecutive day.

The protesting workers demanded their immediate return to work and changes to their temporary contracts.

Other workers of the the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company also joined their colleagues’ ranks in solidarity.

A group of retirees protested in front of the Pension Center Organization’s building in the city of Tabriz, northwest Iran, on Thursday, September 10, demanding an increase in their payments and adjustments in the plans determining their pensions.

"57 percent of pensioners have lost their purchasing power," said one protester, stressing that the regime is not taking serious measures to provide the necessities of the retirees and workers.

These retirees are demanding the adjustment plan measures be implemented regarding their payments. “A 26 percent increase in pensions does not meet the today’s 40 percent inflation,” the protesting retirees said.

On Wednesday, September 9, a group of locals and environmentalist held a rally protesting the reactivation of the Tash Buxitash mine in the city of Shahroud, located in northeast Iran.

Criticizing the city officials’ silence and refusal to follow-up in this regard, the protesters warned the governor of Semnan province to reconsider giving permission to the "Jajarm Alumina" company to operate and extract natural resources from the highest mountain in Semnan province and east of the country.

It is worth noting that any mining in this area has been banned for the past ten years.

900 fired workers of the Barfab factory continued their large protest on Wednesday, September 9, seeking answer for their pending demands from local officials.

In 2016, more than 900 workers of Barfab factory in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province were fired.

These workers have continued their protests for the last four years. The payment of delayed paychecks, employment status in limbo and official’s ignorance through their problems are some of the reasons behind these protests. They also demanded their jobs be classified based on the difficulty of their specific duties.
