Iran: Creditors of state-backed financial institution resume protests

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, January 30, 2021—A group of creditors who had invested in Caspian Credit Institution gathered in front of the Financial settlement committee building on Thursday, January 28 in protest to not receiving their overdue payments.

Four years have passed since this government-backed institution has looted the people’s wealth under an official, government-approved license. Since then, the institution’s customers have been regularly protesting, demanding the company and the government to take action and restore their funds. But in a collusion between Caspian and the government, the regime’s broadcasting apparatus has announced that only 542 cases remain to be settled. Meanwhile, none of the cases of more than 475,000 Caspian depositors have been fully settled and no one listens to them.

On Thursday, January 28, members of the teachers Housing Cooperative in Nurabad, Lorestan province, protested in front of the cooperative’s building in this city. More than 16 years ago, they spent all they had to pay for the land and took high-interest loans hoping to own a house. But for most of them, this wish turned into a mirage and the authorities even removed some of them completely from the list of land applicants and looted their meager money.

One of the protesters said: “I am a teacher in Nurabad who deposited the land money in the housing cooperative account in 2004 according to these documents, but now neither my name nor my address is registered here. When I deposited this money, I had nothing, and I had to borrow … our money was gone, and no one did anything for us. Someone help get our rights for god sake. We are hardworking people too.”

On Thursday, municipal workers in the city of Arvand Kenar, southwest Iran, held a gathering, protesting their paychecks and insurance premium being delayed.

Delayed salaries have become an all too familiar scene across Iran and a common cause of many labor protests

“Our wages and insurance premium have been delayed for several years now, and five to six months of them have not been paid in full,” one of the workers said.

“At the same time, workers' medical records are not renewed or replaced due to delays in the payment of social security premium.

Despite frequent rallies in front of the city council and municipal buildings, there is still no payment for our paychecks or insurance premiums,” he added.
