Iran, May 1, 2019 – Iranian regime Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visited the U.S. last week under the pretext of attending a peace conference held at the United Nations General Assembly. His main objective, however, was opening a dialogue with the U.S. administration, most likely with the blessing of the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the mullahs’ President Hassan Rouhani.
The trip failed to achieve any of Zarif’s objectives and sparked controversial reactions among regime’s officials and government-run media.
One state-run outlet dubbed the initiative as “Decrypting Zarif’s uncommon visit to the U.S.”
“State decision makers have reached the conclusion that they should sidestep U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and go straight to U.S. President Donald Trump himself to open a path to dialogue. Zarif chose a sensitive tactic to achieve this goal which bears considerable risks. His recent trip to New York had meaningful distinctions from his previous ones. His stay in New York was aimed at sending a clear signal to his counterparts for engaging in dialogue with the U.S. while stressing repeatedly on his willingness to ‘get around the discussion table’ or him ‘having authority’ in pushing forward a dialogue initiative,” the piece reads in part.
However, one subject the regime apparatus and Zarif are overlooking is that the climate in Washington is different in comparison to previous U.S. administrations and paving the ground for new dialogue is even more difficult than having the dialogue itself.
Even if Zarif could have made it to President Trump himself, it wouldn’t have been for dialogue. True and real dialogue would have to start from Secretary Pompeo and Ambassador Bolton.
The regime’s former ambassador to Jordan acknowledged that there was no reaction from the U.S. administration to Zarif’s approach while staying in New York.
“The fact that the Americans said we heard Zarif’s message yet didn’t give any positive pulse to his approach clearly shows we are at the beginning of the road. Zarif’s trip to New York was arranged with internal cooperation. Zarif’s comments aired on Fox News is indicative of his attempt to talk directly to the man [President Trump] himself,” said Nosratollah Tajik.
“Zarif has not made it clear on what ground he says that [US President] Trump is not seeking war with the Islamic Republic. He based his assumption on quotes from President Trump’s campaign promises. Should we believe some analysis that indicates Zarif’s presence in New York was to show a green light to the U.S. leadership? It is known that the Islamic Republic is flexible at some particular moments,” a state-run website called Website-24 wrote.
Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, the mullahs’ Majlis (parliament) security committee chair, also weighed in on the matter.
“There is no strategy in having a dialogue between the U.S. and Iran. Even if there was, it wouldn’t be with the blessing of the government,” he explained.
Tabnak website, belonging to the former Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) chief Mohsen Rezaee, now secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council, expressed hopelessness due to the failed outcome of Zarif’s visit to the US.
“It seems that the U.S. State Department response to Zarif’s initiative is an indication of a noncompromising and one-sided approach by the Americans. There is a section in the State Department statement that says the Islamic Republic must first release some of the American prisoners, whom they say are innocent, without any dialogue or prisoner swap,” the Tabnak website wrote.
Ashena, a Rouhani aide, went even further in grossness and put Zarif and the terrorist head of the IRGC Quds Force Qasem Soleimani on two sides of a coin.
Hossein Shiekholeslam, a former Iranian regime ambassador to Syria, attempted to salvage the shame and disgrace brought upon the regime in its entirety after Zarif’s failed attempt to score a point in his trip to the U.S.
“Zarif’s plan in this visit was to bring to the surface the true nature of [President] Trump’s aids in their warmongering quest,” Shiekholeslam said.
All these bickerings and controversial comments from both factions of the crisis-riddled mullahs’ regime proves only one fact: the regime is on a very steep and slippery slope towards dismantling and annihilation from within. Furthermore, external pressures, be it economic, political and … are accelerating the regime’s rapid downfall at the hands of the Iranian people and its Resistance.
