Iran coronavirus update: Over 51,800 deaths; record number of daily fatalities

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, June 14, 2020—Over 51,800 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 332 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Sunday afternoon local time, June 14. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 8,837, around a sixth of the actual figure.

The death toll in various provinces include: 4,230 in Khuzestan, 2,665 in Isfahan, 1,940 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 1,765 in Lorestan, 1,725 in East Azerbaijan, 1,440 in West Azerbaijan, 1,310 in Kermanshah, 1,078 in Kurdistan, 625 in Kerman, and 370 in Hormozgan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The spokesperson of the regime’s Health Ministry on Sunday announced the mullahs’ engineered COVID-19 stats with 108 new deaths in the span of 24 hours. This is the highest daily report in the past two months. “The provinces of West Azerbaijan, Hormozgan, Khuzestan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Sistan & Baluchistan, and Bushehr are in code red status,” said Sima Sadat Lari. “This virus is unpredictable and may catch us off guard at any moment,” the spokesperson added, according to a report wired by the regime’s ISNA news agency.

“We need to focus more on the cultural scope and consequences of the novel coronavirus,” said the regime’s First Vice President Eshagh Jahangiri on Saturday, according to the Youths Journalists Club, an outlet affiliated to the regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC). This is a clear indication of the regime’s major concerns over a new COVID-19 wave and senior officials desperately attempting to swipe the matter under the rug.

“The newly hospitalized patients in the general and ICU branches of our province’s hospitals indicate how controlling the novel coronavirus in Tehran is so fragile,” said Tehran’s COVID-19 Task Force chief Alireza Zali on Saturday, according to the Fars news agency, another IRGC-affiliated outlet.

“Based on the Health Ministry’s daily stats, 16 percent of the country’s victims are in Hormozgan province," according to a report wired by the Tasnim news agency, an outlet affiliated to the IRGC Quds Force. “The status quo is far beyond alarm bells, warnings, or red signs. Hormozgan is now engulfed in a crisis and it is not clear if it can overcome these circumstances,” the report adds.

“Imposing quarantine conditions in Hormozgan for a one-week period is the only method to confront in this province,” said a member of the Bandar Abbas City Council on Saturday, according to the regime’s ILNA news agency. “Otherwise the COVID-19 spread will accelerate and will take more victims. The novel coronavirus is impacting all aspects of our society.”

According to ISNA, the dean of Dezful Medical Sciences University in Khuzestan province described the situation in this city as red and said, “The capacity of Ganjavian Hospital is almost full… Our staff is tired. Five percent of the staff in the jurisdiction of this hospital, approximately 110 people, have contracted coronavirus. About 15 of them are physicians and 50 are nurses.”

Behbehan City Council declared that the cemetery of this city has been shut down until further notice to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Javan reported, adding that the mayor of Behbehan declared the situation in the county as code-red and said, “An order has been dispatched to immediately turn off the lights in parks and to block roads that lead to the cemetery.”

In Kurdistan, IRNA published a report titled “A week of death awaiting Kurdistan” and wrote, “We should expect to experience a week filled with death… Hospitals that only had 50 coronavirus patients now have no more room to admit new patients. There are seven times more coronavirus patients than the previous wave of infection.”

In Isfahan, the dean of the medical sciences university said, “Since last week, the ratio of coronavirus patients has increased by 3-5 percent every day… The number of cases has increased from 350 to 450 patients in the past week. About 26 percent of these patients are hospitalized in the ICU section.” (Source: Javan, June 13)

Ruydad 24 reported on Saturday that in Bushehr, the dean of the medical sciences university said the number of coronavirus deaths in the past three weeks has exceeded the count in the entire first three months of the outbreak, and the number of hospitalized patients has increased six-fold in comparison to last month.

Tasnim quoted the dean of Kerman Medical Sciences University as saying, “There are no white cities in Kerman.”

In Eastern Azerbaijan, ISNA quoted the deputy dean of Tabriz Medical Sciences University as saying, “The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients and patients who are in critical conditions has increased… The stats are worrying, and the control of the disease has become very difficult. A human catastrophe is about to happen.”

The governor of Western Azerbaijan province sounded the alarm about a decrease in the average age of coronavirus victims and said, “In the past weeks, we’ve witnessed a decrease in the age of the deceased.” (Source: Fars News Agency, June 13)

In Golestan, Fars quoted the dean of the medical sciences university as saying, “The Bandar-e Gaz county is in a red situation and all of the province's white cities are now in yellow condition.”
