Iran coronavirus update: Over 165,200 deaths, senior official hints to 200,000 new daily cases

Iran, November 23, 2020—Over 165,200 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 465 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Monday afternoon local time, November 23. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 45,255, nearly a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 40,741 in Tehran, 11,885 in Razavi Khorasan, 9365 in Isfahan, 9010 in Khuzestan, 6865 in Lorestan, 6404 in East Azerbaijan, 5855 in West Azerbaijan, 5666  in Gilan, 4557 in Fars, 4440 in Alborz, 4150 in Hamedan, 4181 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 4121 in Golestan, 3583 in Kermanshah, 3198 in Markazi (Central), 2984 in Kerman, 2887 in Yazd, 2633 in North Khorasan, 2454 in Semnan, 1830 in Hormozgan, 1481 in South Khorasan, 1169 in Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmed. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

“For each Covid-19 death, 200 to 1000 people have contracted the virus. This means if the country has 400 coronavirus deaths in one day (similar to the current daily coronavirus deaths in Iran) there is an average of 200,000 new cases per day. However, there is no country in the world able to find all the positive cases,” said Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi on Monday, according to the state-run Hamshahri daily.

“Regarding the herbal medicine that they say is being produced in Kermanshah and claiming it cures Covid-19, it is not exactly clear what this medication is and where it has been authorized or not,” said Minoo Mohraz, a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Monday. “This issue has yet to be raised in the National Committee of the country’s Covid-19 Task Force and how is it that the Food and Drugs Organization is authorizing a medicine that has not been approved in the Covid-19 Scientific Committee. These measures leave people confused and they are seen paying millions of rials for such medication that its nature is not even clear and has yet to be authorized,” she added, according to the state-run Hamshahri daily.

Alireza Zali, the head of the national Covid-19 Task Force, said on Sunday, “The conditions of the province and city of Tehran are critical, and the situation is not what would be expected of the coronavirus-riddled city. City traffic data and scenes show that the proper and required rhythm to control the epidemic in the city has not bee achieved yet.” (Source: State television, November 22)

The chief executive of the Behesht-e Zahra Organization in Tehran said on Monday, “Tehran has on average 150-200 deaths every day, and the same proportion of Covid-19 deaths have been added to this figure and are being brought for burial in Behesht-e Zahra cemetery every day.” (Source: Javan Daily, November 23)

The spokesperson of Isfahan Medical Sciences University declared on Monday that, in the past day, around 50 people have died in the hospitals covered by this university, according to Mehr News Agency, affiliated with the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

The head of the Covid-19 Task Force in Shiraz Medical Sciences University confirmed 45 death on Sunday and declared the total number of deaths in Fars province at 2,195, as reported by the state television. “In the past 24 hours, we had 448 new hospitalized cases while we were only able to discharge 258 people from hospitals,” the official added.

The public relations department of Markazi Province Medical Sciences University declared on Monday, “In the past 50 days, the number of deaths has been equal to the number of deaths in the past seven months, and this is very alarming.” (Source: ISNA news agency, November 23)

According to the official IRIB News Agency, the dean of Kermanshah Medical Sciences University declared on Monday that the number of confirmed Covid-19 deaths has seen an 81-percent increase month-over-month.

The treatment deputy of Yazd Medical Sciences University said on Monday, “In the past 24 hours, 20 people in the province have died of coronavirus. There are 958 hospitalized patients with Covid-19 symptoms, of which 185 are in ICU.” (Source: Mehr News Agency, November 23)
