Why Iran’s regime is frantically warning about the PMOI

Recently, the state-run Alef website warned about the aftermath of the 2022 nationwide uprising of Iran and wrote, “The events of 2022 confirmed that the [People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI)] has penetrated deeply into the ranks of the opponents of the Islamic Republic both on a broad scale and at a profound level.”

Alef added, “This discourse has been advancing its dangerous project in other layers as well, without the social actors being aware of their role in a play, of which the [PMOI] is the main director and producer. These days, gradually and with a purposeful plan, they narrate history in a way that absolves themselves of accusations and allows them to present themselves as a serious and powerful opposition, instead of promoting their agenda in a hidden manner. They focus on mobilizing support from within Iran.”

The source then warns: “Let us not be oblivious to the fact that there are young people around us who, due to lack of proper understanding of historical realities and due to economic and social gaps, will be attracted to the hidden discourse of the PMOI.”

If we express these confessions in a plain and straightforward language, the following conclusions can be drawn:

– The discourse and literature of the PMOI have deeply penetrated different social layers during the 2022 uprising and are progressing.

– The “social actors,” who in reality are the rebellious segments of the society, are advancing the PMOI’s “dangerous project.”

– The PMOI is a serious and powerful opposition force.

– The PMOI is continuously attracting and recruiting members from within the country, and the concerned authorities are worried about the expanding influence of the Iranian Resistance inside Iran.

The only term left is “discourse” or “hidden discourse” of the PMOI. However, this discourse is by no means hidden and is entirely public. The regime, however, lacks the courage to openly address it, and that expression is: uprising and rebellion and the rejection of the regime in its entirety.

This is not the only case where the regime portrays its own fear of the ultimate overthrow that the enemy might bring. The recent sham absentia trial of the PMOI and 104 individuals, is an expression of the same fear.

In the latest session of this theatrical performance, the so-called judge said, “We warn the countries hosting the accused that hosting these defendants is considered a crime under international conventions against terrorism!”

It is unclear since when the godfather of terrorism, which has been spreading terror across the globe, has become the advocate and promoter of the “international conventions against terrorism.” The judge then continued in the same gesture and threatening tone toward the countries that are hosting PMOI members and called for their extradition.

What has caused such turmoil in the mullahs’ regime? And what factor has prompted the regime, 36 years after the order to execute all the PMOI, to stage this ridiculous show trial of the PMOI in absentia?

The answer can be found in the same article that was mentioned earlier, which warns that if the regime remains negligent, it will be “surrounded by youth who, due to economic and social gaps, will be attracted to the discourse of the PMOI.”
