Iran, January 31, 2020—On January 30, the U.S. Treasury expanded its sanctions on the Iranian regime’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) and its chief Ali Akbar Salehi. The new sanctions will freeze any assets that Salehi has within U.S. jurisdiction.
“The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran has played a big role in Iran breaching its key nuclear commitments. It has exceeded the limits on its uranium stockpile and enrichment levels,” said Brian Hook, the U.S. envoy to Iran. Hook added that Salehi personally inaugurated the installation of new advanced centrifuges to expand Iran’s uranium enrichment capacity.
The newest round of sanctions is part of the U.S. administration’s maximum pressure campaign aimed at reining in the multitude of hostile activities Iran’s regime carries out in the Middle East and across the globe.
This is another devastating blow to one of the strategic goals of the Iranian regime, which is to obtain nuclear weapons for its survival. According to some estimates, until now, the Iranian regime has spent well over $100 billion of the Iranian people’s wealth on nuclear weapons research and development.

How the MEK dealt a decisive blow to the Iranian regime’s nuclear ambitions
The ultimate goal of the religious fascism ruling Iran is to establish a brutal and fundamentalist caliphate across the Middle East. Tehran’s mullahs saw nuclear weapons as a key step toward achieving this goal and pursued it since the early years of founding their regime.
But the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) revealed the regime’s efforts to buy and produce nuclear weapons in 1991. In 2002, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) revealed top-secret information about two previously unknown nuclear sites in Iran, the Natanz uranium enrichment facility and the Arak heavy water reactor.
After the disclosure of Natanz and Arak, the international community woke up to the imminent threat of a dangerous regime obtaining the most dangerous weapon in the world. Senior U.S. officials later acknowledged that the world did not know about the regime’s nuclear program until Iranian dissidents revealed it.
In its 2004 yearly statement, the NCRI stipulated that it had disclosed the information about the Iranian regime’s nuclear facilities based on its humanitarian and national responsibilities and toward promoting peace in the region.
Unfortunately, at the time, the dominant global policy toward Iran was appeasing the mullahs. Instead of standing with the people of Iran and their resistance movement, the international community tried to curb the regime’s nuclear ambitions by giving it concessions, hoping that the mullahs would abandon their dreams of obtaining nuclear weapons. But while the mullahs were negotiating with the West over their nuclear program, they continued to build secret pathways toward the atomic bomb.
Meanwhile, the Iranian resistance continued, against all odds, to expose the Iranian regime’s illicit activities.
The Iranian regime’s officials constantly expressed their angst at the continued stream of disclosures that the Iranian resistance made.
The unending deceit
Even after signing the 2015 nuclear agreement, the Iranian regime did not stop its deceitful activities. In February 2018, Salehi explicitly admitted that the AEOI deceived the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency with the consent and blessings of Ali Khamenei, the regime’s supreme leader.
Presently, the new sanctions are closing the final loopholes for the Iranian regime and its atomic energy organization to revive and continue its dream of obtaining nuclear weapons.
