European Parliament conference calls for decisive action on Iran

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, a conference was held at the European Parliament in Brussels in which politicians discussed a new policy toward Iran that focuses on supporting the people and the Iranian Resistance. The event featured speeches by several European Parliament members and Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

Milan Zver, a member of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee and a former Minister of Education and Sports in Slovenia, stressed that that the NCRI is “capable of changes and has everything that is needed when the responsibility for the future of Iran will sooner or later be accepted” and “has proven through its work that it is persistent, democratically organized, excellently led, and equipped with Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan for the future of Iran.”

Professor Alejo Vidal-Quadras, reflecting on an assassination attempt against him last year, stated: “This brutal attempt to silence me has only strengthened my resolve.”

As President of the International Committee in Search of Justice, he added: ” For decades, the regime has waged a well-funded disinformation campaign to discredit the PMOI and isolate its supporters. But having witnessed their work firsthand, as many of other members of the parliament here present, I know that PMOI is a legitimate popular force for a free and democratic Iran. He underscored the international recognition of the Iranian Resistance, pointing out that “137 world leaders affirm their support for the PMOI and their members in Ashraf 3.”

At the European Parliament conference, Petras Auštrevičius, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, highlighted the failure of the appeasement policy and its consequences, which has made the Iranian regime more belligerent and aggressive rather than reforming. “The regime in Iran is a threat, not only for its own people but also to Europe, the region, and global peace,” he warned. He noted that Iran’s export of fear and repression through the IRGC requires immediate action, stating, “Member states like my own country Lithuania have called for the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization… a critical step in curbing Tehran’s malign influence abroad and domestic repression.”

He also paid tribute to the courage of Resistance Units and the Iranian people’s resilience in the face of state violence. “Supporting their right to self-defense aligns with the democratic principles we uphold in Europe,” he added.

Carlo Ciccioli, a member of the European Parliament from Italy, described the clerical regime as a government that has systematically oppressed its people for forty years and destabilized the Middle East with its aggressive policies. He noted that a new and firm policy toward the regime must include support for the NCRI as a democratic alternative. Ciccioli reiterated his support for the 10-point plan that Mrs. Maryam Rajavi presented to the Council of Europe in 2006 and described it as a “clear roadmap toward a future where human rights, freedom of expression, justice, and equality are not merely legitimate aspirations but tangible realities for all Iranian people.”

In her remarks to the conference, Mrs. Rajavi said: “During the previous term, this Parliament passed two resolutions advocating for the designation of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This was a vital opportunity to counteract the belligerence of the religious dictatorship governing Iran—a step that, unfortunately, was not taken.

“Additionally, the activation of the snapback mechanism remained unaddressed. For decades, this regime has relied on exporting fundamentalism, terrorism, and warmongering as its primary strategy to suppress the Iranian people and thwart their uprisings.”

strategic guarantee for its survival. The long-overdue activation of the snapback mechanism and the six UN Security Council resolutions is the first urgent and necessary step. Nevertheless, the ultimate solution for getting rid of this evil dictatorship is regime change at the hands of the Iranian people and the Iranian Resistance.”
