There is a possibility that the seventh coronavirus wave in this country can lead to a tripling of the daily death toll, says a leading expert in Iran.
“The deaths can reach triple digits yet forecasting the exact timing is difficult. It is possible for the death to toll to triple, and we need to take into consideration the fact that currently, the number of deaths we are reporting are of those individuals who have been confirmed to have contracted Covid-19. If we add the number of probable people, our death toll could already be in the three figures,” says Hamid Soury, an epidemiologist in an interview with the semi-official ISNA news agency on August 3.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have active pathology measures to find those who have contracted the illness. The number of our tests is very low per capita. However, what we can say now is that the epidemic trend continues to increase, and we should be focusing on minimizing the height of the peak, beginning the decreasing process as soon as possible, and reducing the extent and amplitude of the peak. This means from the moment the peak begins and ends, the timetable of the extent should be very short. This is what has been accomplished in some countries and despite the fact that a new peak is possible, the height and extent of that peak are minimized,” Soury added.
We cannot analyze how the virus is spreading across the country
“Covid has in the past months, especially from April onward, witnessed many ups and downs. We even had a small peak with a low height in April and early May. However, since we don’t have an active pathology process and we are mostly focused on the number of people hospitalized and the death toll, the changes in the epidemic are not very vivid. Thus, we cannot analyze how the virus is spreading across the country and that is why the peak was not specified,” he continued.
“Unfortunately, during the course of this 30-month pandemic, our country has usually been among the top 10 to 15 countries in the world when it comes to deaths and other issues resulting from the illness per capita. It shouldn’t be this way,” Soury finalized.
Over 530,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of April 8.
One of the main reasons behind the extremely high number of coronavirus casualties in Iran is the regime’s deceptive measures to keep a lid on the true figures. Officials also refused to announce the start of the pandemic in Iran, leaving the people defenseless in the face of the virus. This led to the fast spread of the virus across the country and continuous waves to this day.
