Iran, June 13, 2019 – Iranian state-run media are already exaggerating the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Tehran, while complaints about the fruitless visit of German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas have yet to die down.
Iranian media outlets close to President Hassan Rouhani’s camp are viewing the Japanese visit with concern.
“A number of senior diplomats, probably to decrease the created excitement in the media, reiterate that ‘Abe neither visits Tehran as a mediator nor as a messenger, and he has no swift solution to end the nuclear crisis,’” the Tadbir-va-omid website wrote quoting Japan Times.
Hassan Beheshtipour, and Iranian pundit and former chief of the Al-Alam News Network said, “Iran is going through delicate times. It seems that there is no end to the threats and obstacle of the U.S.” and responded to the question whether one can be optimistic about the Japanese PM’s visit to Tehran saying: “The important thing is the opinion and decision of the U.S. and particularly [President] Donald Trump. Therefore, we can’t be optimistic about Abe’s visit.”
“It’s necessary to manage this visit cautiously,” he warned.
Acknowledging the Iranian regime’s stance that put the Islamic Republic in this position in the first place, he said: “If as always, we insist on exaggerating our military forces and nuclear activities, it will be business as usual and the country will face all sorts of problems.”
Ebtekar, another newspaper close to the so-called reformist camp, writes, “Observers believe that while the Japanese PM’s visit to Iran after 41 years is considered a symbolic visit, considering the current circumstances, one can’t be very optimistic about its practical output.”
Referring to Tehran’s escalating international isolation crisis, the Iran newspaper, the mouthpiece of Hassan Rouhani’s government, writes, “In his visit to Japan, Trump changed his tone considerably and accepted that the Prime Minister of Japan becomes the mediator and acts as the messenger between the two sides. Do we have to be overwhelmed with joy for such a visit and believe that all the problems have been solved? There is no doubt that the problems between Iran and the U.S. won’t be solved that easily, especially when a person like Trump is in charge of the White House.”
“It is unreasonable to expect a visit by the Japanese PM and European officials to solve the problems between Iran and the U.S., but does that mean we shouldn’t be optimistic about these talks, consider them a failure and in vain? That’s a negative too,” the government’s official newspaper concludes.
In a nutshell, Rouhani’s government asks the public to be optimistic without expecting any results.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s camp is more explicit in admitting the failure of these visits.
The Keyhan newspaper, known as Khamenei’s mouthpiece, attacks Rouhani’s faction.
“Those same advisers suggest the mediation of Japan, Germany, Oman and Switzerland these days. However, they know better than anyone that this is how we miss this opportunity. They [the advisers] act as if our government has not tasted negotiations yet. As if our foreign minister was negotiating with someone other than the U.S. Secretary of State for two and a half years. Now they want to present the resolve-lacking Japan and Germany as mediators? And then what? Back to the square one of Snakes and Ladders!”
Now we have to see whether the ruling mullahs in Tehran will find an escape route in this latest act of the four-decade-long play of death and destruction of the Islamic Republic of thugs.
