Locals left in rubbles and without aid after quake shakes northwest Iran

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, February 26, 2020—While locals near the cities of Khoy and Salmas, along with other areas of West Azerbaijan Province in northwest Iran, are facing massive destruction following the February 23 earthquake, the city of Kerman in south-central Iran was also shaken by a 4.9-magnitude earthquake at 4 am Monday, February 25. This quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers and the people of Kerman have been in utter fear and concern.

The latest information from two earthquakes near the cities of Khoy and Salmas indicates 50 to 100 percent damage to more than 3,500 houses in over 100 villages across this region.

The village of Mokhayen, with a population of around 1,300, has suffered the most damage, according to the regime’s state news agency. The second earthquake on Sunday, measuring at 5.9-magnitude, unfortunately, left this village completely destroyed.

“Locals of the Koutan-abad village have been forgotten and are still waiting for Red Crescent medical teams. More than 80 percent of the homes in this village of 130 families, made of mudbricks and wooden roofs, have been leveled,” a state news agency wrote.

Reports indicate 104 people being injured as a result of the Sunday earthquakes in northwest Iran. Earthquake-hit locals in a village of West Azerbaijan Province attacked a team of the regime’s Red Crescent delegation. The angry crowd was demanding aid from the regime’s state agencies.

“Ten members of Red Crescent teams were dispatched to an earthquake-hit village to gather necessary information and deliver a damage assessment report. However, a number of locals who suffered in the earthquake began quarreling and clashing with the Red Crescent team. One team member was attacked as locals were protesting why the Red Crescent crew had not delivered any aid,” according to a state news agency report.

Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi, head of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), emphasized the mullahs’ regime is continuing its measures to cloak the truth about the earthquake-hit areas. Madam Rajavi called on fellow Iranians to provide aid to earthquake areas, especially areas near the cities of Khoy and Salmas.

“Mullahs’ regime is covering up damages in the 5.7-Richter earthquake in W. Azerbaijan. Over 100 villages were damaged. I request help for those affected, especially in #Khoy & #Salmas & urge vigilance by fellow compatriots in the Province about subsequent aftershocks,” Madam Rajavi tweeted.
