Iran, September 27, 2019—On Tuesday, in a meeting with the members of the Assembly of Experts, Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Iranian regime, attacked European states for not having helped his regime out of its current ordeal.
In his remarks, Khamenei said, “[The Europeans] do not have the same capabilities, hegemony and facilities [as the U.S.]; but, the mentality of the European leaders is the same as that of the U.S. officials. They enter the scene as mediators, they negotiate, contact, make calls, make lengthy speeches, and make commitments, but they are not truthful.”
Khamenei also lamented that the Europeans have in effect “adhered to the U.S.'s cruel secondary sanctions and did not take any steps.”
Meanwhile, Khamenei revealed his desperate need to garner support from European countries and avoid total isolation from the international community by saying, “One point about Europe and the foreign policy affairs is that we have not closed the door for establishing relations and negotiating with any country in the world, apart from the Zionist Regime and the U.S. We are indeed busy working and endeavouring.”
Khamenei’s desperate and contradictory remarks come against the backdrop of increased international criticism against the Iranian regime for its destabilizing and hostile activities. Last week, as world leaders prepared to convene in New York for the yearly UN General Assembly meeting, Tehran launched a massive missile and drone attack against the facilities of Saudi oil giant Aramco.
While the regime tried to shrug off responsibility for the attack and attribute it to the Houthis, its proxy terrorists in Yemen, strong evidence proved that the missiles were indeed launched from Iran’s soil. The incident drew strong condemnation from world leaders, including European officials who were previously trying to mediate negotiations between the Iranian regime and the U.S.
Interestingly, there’s a mismatch between the English and Persian versions of Khamenei’s remarks published on his websites. The Persian edition of Khamenei’s website has described the U.S. and Europe as “enemies and devils such as America and evil Europe,” while his English website, tuned to a foreign audience, has omitted this comment.

Khameni’s frustration over the deadlock of his regime is reflected in comments by other regime officials. On Tuesday, Hassan Rouhani, the Iranian regime’s president met with Emanuel Macron, his French counterpart, on the sidelines of the UNGA meeting, to express his outrage on a statement by France Germany and the United Kingdom, which made it clear that Tehran was responsible for the attack on Aramco.
In his meeting with Macron, Rouhani described the statement issued by the so-called E3 as baseless allegations raised against the Islamic Republic and criticized such a measure, according to the Iranian regime’s state media outlets.
Also this week, Ahmad Jannati, a senior Iranian cleric and head of the mullahs’ Guardian Council and Assembly of Experts, acknowledged the complete impasse facing this regime.
“We are not the winners in negotiations [with the U.S.]. In fact, we will have to obey their commands. They want to restrict us and force us to surrender by limiting our abilities one by one. This includes our ballistic missile capabilities to other issues,” Jannati concluded.
Adding salt to the wound was two days of rallies and protests by a large gathering of supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in New York, who were there to echo the voices of millions of Iranians who are fed up with the mullahs’ regime and are calling for regime change in the protests they stage every day across Iran.
